Job Description

St. John Vianney College Seminary, located in Miami, Florida, is a distinguished institution within the Catholic Archdiocese of Miami, dedicated to the formation and education of seminarians preparing for the priesthood. The seminary serves as a spiritual and academic home for those called to serve the Church and community. This institution is a vital part of the Archdiocese, which encompasses over half a million Catholics across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties. The Archdiocese itself is characterized by its cultural and linguistic diversity, celebrating Mass in 17 languages and managing a broad network of 109 churches and missions alongside 64 schools, including 14 high schools.

The role of Cook at St. John Vianney College Seminary is a full-time position that plays an essential part in supporting the daily life and nourishment of seminarians, faculty, staff, and guests. Reporting directly to the Chef Manager or their designated overseer, the Cook is responsible for preparing, cooking, and serving breakfast and lunch for approximately 60 to 70 individuals each day. Beyond daily meal preparation, the Cook also supports special functions such as parties, holiday meals, luncheons, brunches, special dinners, fundraising events, and other social occasions hosted by the seminary.

This position demands a high level of professionalism, attention to food safety, and culinary skills. The Cook must adhere to proper food handling protocols including cleaning and sanitizing work areas, equipment, and utensils to ensure the highest standards of hygiene and safety. Food preparation duties involve handling a variety of ingredients, from meats and vegetables to snacks and desserts, precisely following recipes and the instructions laid out by the food service manager.

Serving food requires meticulous portion control and attentiveness to quality to ensure all guests receive equal and safe servings. The Cook also manages the dining area's cleanliness post-meal, including wiping tables, scraping trays, and removing trash, maintaining a welcoming environment for all who dine. Additional responsibilities include inventory control, monitoring food storage temperatures, checking expiration dates, and reporting any irregularities to supervisors.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced commercial kitchen environment, demonstrating excellent multitasking abilities, strong interpersonal skills, and the capacity to maintain confidentiality and discretion. The seminary emphasizes a supportive work culture aligned with its Catholic mission and values, expecting employees to embody professionalism, respect, and Christian conduct in their interactions. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are preferred, reflecting the diverse community served by the seminary.

Overall, the Cook role is crucial not only for sustaining daily nourishment but also for contributing to the broader mission and operation of the seminary. It involves a blend of culinary expertise, safety consciousness, teamwork, and a commitment to the values upheld by the Roman Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Miami.
