Kindred Hospital Seattle - First Hill is a premier 80-bed long-term acute care hospital located in the heart of downtown Seattle. This facility offers specialized medical care designed to support patients requiring extended recovery periods beyond traditional hospital stays. The hospital is equipped to deliver 24-hour clinical care, seven days a week, in partnership with patients' physicians to facilitate a seamless journey to wellness. The role offered is for a Food Service Worker who plays a critical part in the hospital's support team by preparing and serving food to patients, employees, and special functions with adherence to proper food handling and safety techniques. This position is essential in ensuring that all meals meet the nutritional guidelines and safety standards established within the hospital's policies and procedures. The Food Service Worker must maintain a clean and safe working environment consistent with regulatory standards and departmental requirements to uphold the hospital’s commitment to patient health and safety.
This is a vital position that requires keen attention to food safety, diet order compliance, and efficient food preparation using standardized recipes and planned menus. The Food Service Worker also takes responsibility for receiving, purchasing, and storing food supplies in accordance with established protocols to prevent waste and ensure adequate inventory levels. The role requires diligent monitoring of refrigeration and freezer temperatures, proper labeling and storage of food, and adherence to FDA Food Code standards for food serving temperatures.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining kitchen cleanliness and sanitation, operating and maintaining kitchen equipment safely, and participating cooperatively with hospital staff across departments. Food Service Workers also support menu management by utilizing computerized systems to handle patient diet orders, menu edits, and tray ticket generation.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a quantity food preparation setting such as a hospital, nursing center, or restaurant, possess knowledge of therapeutic diets, and demonstrate exceptional communication skills to interact effectively with patients, family members, and hospital staff. Completion of a Food Protection Manager's Certification within 90 days of hire is mandatory to ensure compliance with food safety guidelines.

Job Requirements

- food protection manager's certification from an accredited ANSI-CFP program mandatory within 90 days
- one year's experience in quantity food preparation setting such as restaurant, hospital, nursing center, or hotel
- must read, write, and speak fluent English
- must have good and regular attendance

Job Duties
- prepares food following department standardized recipes, planned menus, and policies and procedures
- serves and portions food per department standardized recipes, planned menus, and policies and procedures
- follows patient diet order when serving food to patients
- follow standardized menus for patient and cafeteria food preparation
- makes only authorized changes to the planned menu and records the change according to established policy
- uses production sheets to direct preparation and quantity of food
- preparation of food is done to meet established mealtimes
- prepares and serves food at the proper temperature set forth by the FDA Food Code
- ensures food served to patients has been properly labeled per policy
- labels, dates, and stores food properly according to proper cool-down techniques and established policies
- takes refrigerator/freezer temperatures twice a day and reports any temperatures out of range
- assists in receiving, storing, and verifying invoices for incoming food, supplies
- ensures adequate supply of food and supplies and reports inadequate stock levels timely
- uses food supplies and equipment efficiently to prevent waste
- keeps work area clean and uncluttered
- performs cleaning assignments using proper cleaning chemicals
- uses proper infection control techniques and protective equipment
- washes dishes, pots, and pans according to procedures
- takes dish machine temperature and sanitizer concentration and reports problems
- stores dishes, pots, and pans properly to prevent contamination
- operates equipment according to manufacturer and supervisor direction
- maintains equipment in safe and clean condition
- maintains security of the department
- performs all duties using proper safety and sanitation techniques with PPE
- checks for new diet orders, discharges, room changes prior to meal tray assembly
- assists patients with menu completion
- uses menu management software to update patient info and print menus
- works cooperatively with co-workers across departments
- communicates issues and opportunities for improvement to supervisor
- assumes leadership in kitchen when assigned
- participates in performance improvement programs and survey processes
