The position of Cook/Assistant Chef at Cantex is a vital role within the Nutrition Services Department, instrumental in ensuring that patient meals are prepared properly, cooked to standard, and apportioned according to authorized menus in a timely fashion. This position demands adherence to sanitation standards and food safety regulations to protect the health and well-being of patients. The Cook/Assistant Chef will be responsible for preparing meals in a clean, organized environment, maintaining food quality while minimizing waste, and ensuring that all food service areas are sanitary and safe. This role requires the ability to work collaboratively within a team, demonstrating leadership skills when needed, such as assisting with training and supervising newly hired staff. The role also involves inventory management, safety hazard identification, and compliance with policy and procedure to maintain efficient and compliant food service operations.

This is a full-time position offering competitive compensation along with a $1,000 incentive bonus, and there is also a $2,500 sign-on incentive bonus available for qualifying candidates. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • current state Food Manager Certificate
  • prior experience in food preparation in healthcare or long-term care preferred
  • ability to communicate effectively in English
  • ability to maintain sanitation and safety standards
  • ability to work in a team-oriented environment

Job Qualifications

  • Current state Food Manager Certificate
  • experience in quality food preparation and production in either long-term care or healthcare setting is preferred
  • ability to read, write, and speak the English language

Job Duties

  • Prepares or directs preparation of food items on assigned or scheduled menus
  • adheres to food production and usage schedules and avoids waste
  • appropriately and immediately labels, dates, and stores food items or leftovers after use
  • maintains sanitation of equipment and utensils, all work, and storage areas by cleaning immediately after use
  • prepares or directs preparation of special items, meals, and snacks
  • prepares special snacks and supplements as instructed by Nutrition Services Director or Chef and identifies with patient name, room number, date, and time
  • identifies and corrects safety hazards in food service areas
  • assists in establishment and maintenance of perpetual supplies inventory and notifies Nutrition Services Director of shortages or discrepancies
  • complies with established policy, practices, and standards for food preparation
  • logs and records temperatures of food, refrigerators, freezers, and dispensers as appropriate
  • assists in the training, orientation and supervision of newly hired Nutrition Services staff when assigned as a Partner in Excellence (PIE)
  • instructs and supervises workers in maintenance and care of equipment in absence of the Nutrition Services Director or Chef
  • orients and instructs new employees in regulations and policies in conjunction with the Nutrition Services Director
  • determines that food is prepared and served on trays as attractively as possible and that the flavor and temperature are correct
  • assists in standardization of recipes to meet menu needs
  • maintains portion control of foods served
  • assists in checking food supplies on food order forms as they arrive from vendors
  • unpacks and stores food and supplies as they arrive
  • maintains orderly and correct storage of all food items, dry storage, freezer storage, and refrigerator storage
  • prepares tray cards in the absence of the Nutrition Services Director, Chef, or Ticket Aide
  • functions as a team leader and role model
  • reviews and enforces Cantex Continuing Care Network Clinical Policies and Procedures for Abuse Prevention
  • attends weekly in-services, understands, and complies with Patient Care Management Systems
  • responsible for assuring patient/resident safety
  • performs other duties and tasks as assigned
