Job Description

The Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located in Gainesville, Florida, is a vital facility dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of Veterans. This establishment operates under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, providing comprehensive medical and supportive services to Veterans within the region. The Nutrition and Food Service department specifically focuses on delivering high-quality, nutritious meals tailored to the dietary requirements of Veteran patients, playing a crucial role in their overall health and recovery. As a federal medical center, the institution emphasizes not only excellent patient care but also adherence to federal employment standards, ensuring a professional and supportive working environment for its staff.

The Cook position at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center is an essential role within the Nutrition and Food Service department. Classified as a WG 6 grade level, this full-time, permanent position provides an hourly wage ranging from $23.10 to $26.95. The primary objective of this role is to prepare and cook a wide variety of meals, including regular and therapeutic diets such as diabetic, low sodium, low protein, and gluten-free options. This role requires careful attention to detail, adherence to safety and sanitation protocols, and the ability to efficiently manage multiple cooking processes to ensure meals are prepared and served on time and at the correct temperature.

The work schedule includes rotating shifts with early mornings, mid-morning to afternoon, and late shifts including weekends, reflecting the continuous demand for nutritional services within the medical center. This schedule demands flexibility and dedication. The physical requirements of this position are significant; it requires continuous standing, walking, frequent bending, reaching, and lifting objects up to 40 pounds unassisted. Manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to operate kitchen equipment safely are vital competencies for success in this role.

As a federal employee in this position, the Cook must be a U.S. citizen or national, pass necessary background checks including suitability and fitness evaluations, and participate in pre-employment screenings such as drug testing. Additionally, employees are subject to a one-year probationary period to assess their performance and conduct in alignment with federal standards and departmental goals. The role also includes compliance with health and safety mandates, such as annual influenza vaccination or approved exemptions, to protect both staff and Veteran patients.

This position offers candidates the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the wellbeing of Veterans by preparing meals that meet stringent nutritional and therapeutic standards. Working within a dedicated team at a reputable federal medical institution, the Cook will engage in diverse culinary practices including grilling, broiling, roasting, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, stewing, braising, and assembling meals and desserts. The role fosters a balanced blend of culinary skill, nutrition knowledge, and operational efficiency, making it ideal for individuals passionate about food service in a healthcare setting.
