The role of a Cook at St. David's North Austin Medical Center is integral to supporting the quality healthcare experience delivered through nutrition and food services. This role involves planning, cooking, and preparing all food items served throughout the facility, including patient meals, cafeteria services, and special catering events. The cook ensures that meals meet patient-specific care standards, which helps promote high levels of patient satisfaction and wellness. Responsibilities include reviewing production sheets to determine the quantity and type of foods to prepare, adhering to standardized recipes and health department guidelines, maintaining exceptional standards of food quality, safety, and sanitation, and participating actively in menu planning and forecasting production needs. The position is an essential part of the hospital’s commitment to providing nourishing and safe meals within a healthcare environment.
Furthermore, the Cook will be expected to manage multiple cooking techniques including baking, roasting, steaming, and preparing sauces, soups, stews, and casseroles. They will regularly test food for proper cooking using sensory checks like tasting and smelling. Compliance with City of Austin, Texas Department of Health, and JCAHO standards for food production, storage, and service is vital. The Cook will also ensure the maintenance of a clean and sanitary work environment, implement infection control practices, and prevent cross-contamination.

Job Requirements
- High School Graduate or GED equivalent
- 1 year of food production experience or 3 years of healthcare or retail food service cooking experience
- current ServSafe Food Handler Permit or Health Department Food Handler Card or State Food Safety permit within 7 days of hire

Job Duties
- Review production sheets to determine types and quantities of main entrees, meats, soups, and vegetables to be prepared
- prepare and cook food items for patients, staff, visitors, and special functions following standardized recipes and accepted methods
- mix ingredients according to recipes
- bake, roast, and steam meats, fish, and other foods
- make sauces, soups, stews, and casseroles
- test food being cooked by tasting, smelling, and/or piercing to ensure proper cooking
- follow standardized recipes to ensure consistent quality
- adhere to City of Austin, Texas Department of Health, and JCAHO standards for food production, service, and storage
- maintain clean cook area and follow sanitation and infection control guidelines to prevent cross contamination
- plan cooking schedule and service to ensure timely readiness of food for tray line, cafeteria, physician's dining rooms, and catered events
- review menus and forecast production needs weekly
