Job Description

NYC Health + Hospitals/Sea View is a distinguished 304-bed long-term care facility located on an expansive 88-acre landmark campus nestled within Staten Island's scenic Greenbelt. This facility offers high-quality healthcare services, focusing on specialized long-term skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation in a comforting and supportive environment. The role available at Sea View involves a Food Preparation and Cooking position within the healthcare environment. Working under direct supervision, the cook is responsible for preparing and cooking food that meets the dietary requirements of patients, many of whom may require modified or specialized diets. This position demands vigilance in following menu cards and diet lists, ensuring adherence to health standards, and maintaining appropriate food quality. The cook is also expected to operate various kitchen tools and equipment safely while supervising dietary aides and assisting with training programs.

This position works typical shifts from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM, with alternating weekends, ensuring coverage to support the facility's operational needs. It offers a dynamic work environment within a renowned healthcare system, combining culinary skills with a dedication to patient care and safety. This role is vital in supporting the health and well-being of Sea View’s patients through meticulous food preparation and a commitment to nutritional excellence.

Job Requirements

  • Elementary school graduation through the eighth grade
  • Formal course in basic cooking principles
  • New York City Department of Health Food Protection Course Certificate
  • Two years of full-time, paid experience as a cook or equivalent combination of education, experience and training
  • Ability to read and write English
  • Ability to understand and carry out instructions

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time, paid experience as a cook

Job Duties

  • Checks menu cards, special and/or modified diet lists to determine types and quantities of foods to be prepared in accordance with standard procedures
  • Prepares or supervises the washing, trimming, cooking and seasoning of all food items
  • Utilizes a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment such as blenders, mixers, grinders, slicers and tenderizers in the preparation and cooking of foods
  • Prepares food utilizing such equipment as steam kettles, grills and ovens and maintains correct temperatures for all foods
  • Tastes foods for consistency and seasoning and corrects as necessary to assure proper flavor and texture
  • Apportions servings and prepares or directs the preparation and distribution of food to serving areas in accordance with departmental standards
  • Inspects foods and meats in work and storage areas for compliance with storage, safety and sanitary standards
  • Instructs and supervises all dietary aides assigned to unit and assists in orientation and in-service training programs
  • Participates in daily menu conferences and confers with supervisor concerning menus, food preparation, quality recipes, use of leftovers and related matters
