Job Description

J.Sann & Son is a newly launched cigar brand based in Miami, Florida, operating in partnership with the well-established Drew Estate. The company specializes in small-batch cigar manufacturing and operates a unique combination of a cigar bar, restaurant, and retail establishment, offering a comprehensive luxury cigar experience. J.Sann & Son aims to blend artisanal craftsmanship with premium hospitality, creating a distinctive presence in the cigar industry. As a dynamic business expanding across multiple entities, it emphasizes quality, innovation, and exceptional customer service in every aspect of its operations.

The role of Controller/Accounting Manager at J.Sann & Son is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing all accounting operations across the company’s three consolidated entities: manufacturing, hospitality, and e-commerce. The individual in this role will ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial reporting, maintain compliance with accounting standards, and drive financial performance to meet business targets. This position requires a strong accounting professional capable of managing complex multi-entity financial frameworks, including general ledger oversight, payroll accounting, intercompany activity, and consolidated cash flow management.

The Controller/Accounting Manager will play a pivotal role during the close cycles, preparing monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements with precision and timeliness. They will also be responsible for establishing and enhancing accounting policies, processes, and internal controls suitable for a growing and evolving business environment. Leadership in implementing accounting and payroll system integrations and automation will be emphasized to streamline operations and support accurate financial data management.

In manufacturing, the Controller is tasked with managing standard costing, inventory valuation, and cost of goods sold specific to cigar production. Oversight of inventory transfers between warehouses and related parties and handling federal and state excise tax treatments are equally important. In the hospitality sector, the role includes supervision of revenue recognition, sales reconciliation between POS systems and general ledger, and management of labor cost accounting, including payroll taxes related to hourly wages, tips, and tip pooling. A focus on margin analysis for food, beverage, and cigars is essential in driving operational efficiency and profitability.

For the e-commerce component, the Controller will support system integrations between sales platforms, fulfillment systems, and accounting. They will also ensure consistent policies for return accounting, allowances, and reserves. The role demands an individual with deep knowledge of GAAP, strong financial reporting skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, hands-on environment typical of a small but growing company. Experience with inventory management software and POS system integrations, particularly with Toast, is valued.

Overall, this role offers a unique opportunity to join a vibrant, innovative brand at an exciting time of growth, bringing comprehensive controller expertise to a distinctive business that combines manufacturing, hospitality, and retail in the luxury cigar market. Candidates can expect a challenging and rewarding work environment where financial leadership directly impacts business success and strategic decision-making.
