The City of Cape Coral is recognized for its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through various recreational, cultural, and public events sponsored by its well-established Parks and Recreation Department. This department plays a crucial role in organizing programs and activities that foster community spirit, encourage healthy lifestyles, and provide entertainment and educational opportunities for citizens of all ages.
The Special Events Division focuses on planning, coordinating, and executing various community-centered events and programs that occur at multiple parks and recreational facilities throughout Cape Coral. This division requires an individual with a robust blend of administrative skills and hands-on fieldwork experience, who is capable of managing multiple aspects of event logistics including vendor relations, facility oversight, and public interactions. The role is classified as safety sensitive and fingerprinting is mandatory as part of the hiring process, underscoring the city's emphasis on maintaining a secure and trustworthy environment for all participants and staff.
In this contract role, the successful candidate will be responsible for numerous duties that support both the administrative functions of event management and the operational tasks on event days. The position demands flexibility, as it requires availability to work weekends and select holidays, including significant dates such as New Year's Eve and the Fourth of July. This scheduling flexibility is essential to support the city's commitment to delivering memorable and well-organized community celebrations throughout the year.
Key responsibilities include assisting with facility oversight, which involves managing the Parks and Recreation catalog, handling registration processes, performing various secretarial tasks, answering phones, and managing bookkeeping duties including purchase orders and check requests. Additionally, the role involves processing work orders and providing assistance with children’s programs, ensuring a smooth operation at designated parks like Four Freedoms Park and programs serving special populations such as persons with developmental disabilities.
This position emphasizes strong public relations and communication skills, as the individual will frequently interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner. Proficiency in computer use and office equipment operation is expected, along with skills in typing, maintaining records, calendar scheduling, and cash handling. The candidate will also contribute to programming activities, support the preparation of public service announcements, and handle other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This diverse combination of responsibilities makes this role ideal for individuals who enjoy varied tasks and working directly with the community.
Qualified applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 60 days of employment. The work environment is primarily a standard office setting with some physical tasks, including occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds and prolonged periods of visual and computer-related work. Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary, as is the ability to solve problems logically and follow complex instructions accurately.
While this position does not include benefits and is on a contract basis with hours that may vary, it offers an invaluable opportunity for individuals seeking to contribute to community wellness and engagement through special events planning and recreational services in the beautiful and vibrant City of Cape Coral. This role encourages growth in public relations, administrative expertise, and event coordination, providing meaningful experiences within the public sector's recreational environment.
