Job Description

Cornell University, a prestigious Ivy League institution renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and diversity, is seeking a dedicated Concierge to join its Housing team located on Roosevelt Island, New York. As part of Cornell’s community-focused approach, the Housing-Roosevelt Island unit provides a safe and welcoming environment for all residents. This role is integral to maintaining the security, satisfaction, and smooth operational flow within the residential building. The Concierge position will work a Friday to Tuesday overnight shift, totaling 35 hours per week, classified as non-exempt with a competitive salary range between $23.13 and $26.26 per hour, in accordance with NYC Human Rights Law Int 1208-2018.

The Concierge acts as the first point of contact for residents, guests, vendors, and contractors, ensuring that every individual entering or exiting the property is properly identified and monitored. The role demands vigilance, professionalism, and excellent interpersonal skills to welcome and register visitors, oversee the reception and distribution of mail and packages, and maintain safety standards throughout the premises. This position also requires responding promptly to emergency situations, managing unauthorized activities, and resolving resident complaints with tact and efficiency. Additionally, the Concierge is responsible for coordinating move-in and move-out activities, maintaining detailed logs of shift activity, and providing supervision of support staff such as porters when directed.

This position is ideal for candidates with prior experience in concierge services, front desk operations, or doorperson roles, especially those who thrive in dynamic, resident-focused environments. The ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and overnight shifts, is essential. Cornell values inclusion and diversity highly, offering an equitable workplace free from discrimination, and encourages applicants from historically underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds to contribute to their community. Notably, the university complies with federal laws supporting qualified veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Joining Cornell University not only means becoming part of a historic academic institution but also contributing to a welcoming residential living environment that enables students and staff to engage fully with their community. The Concierge plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional service, enhanced safety, and operational excellence, supporting Cornell’s foundational principle of access and inclusive education for any person, any study. This is a rewarding opportunity for those passionate about building community and providing outstanding service in a secure residential setting.
