Job Description
Child Nutrition Services (CNS) operates within the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) and is dedicated to providing nutritious, well-balanced meals to students across various school sites. CNS plays a critical role in supporting the health and academic success of students by ensuring access to high-quality, safe, and appealing food options that meet federal and state nutrition guidelines. The department is committed to upholding the highest standards of food safety, sanitation, and customer service. CNS values leadership, teamwork, and a positive work environment to foster professional growth and community engagement among its staff. The Child Nutrition Services Assistant Manager position is a noncertified role classified under pay grade 18, reflecting its importance as a supportive leadership position within the school cafeteria setting. This position reports to the CNS Manager and plays an essential role in overseeing daily cafeteria operations and managing responsibilities during the absence of the manager.
The CNS Assistant Manager is responsible for assisting in the management and operation of a school cafeteria. This involves hands-on duties such as preparing, cooking, and serving meals including salads and a la carte items while adhering to standardized recipes and maintaining accurate food preparation documentation. The role also encompasses leadership responsibilities by managing cafeteria staff and maintaining smooth daily operations in the absence of the CNS Manager. Effective management extends to cash handling where the assistant manager serves as a cashier, ensuring precise records of all food transactions via a computerized point of sale system. This position requires meticulous attention to financial procedures, assisting with deposits, and maintaining clean and sanitary kitchen and cafeteria environments. Working under a nonexempt status, this full-time position typically involves a Monday-Friday workweek with schedules varying by school assignment, and it is not eligible for hybrid telework arrangements. The assistant manager provides excellent customer service to students, parents, and school staff, collaborating closely to create a welcoming environment while complying with all child nutrition laws, policies, and procedures. This role emphasizes a blend of culinary skills, leadership, record keeping, and customer interaction to support the overall mission of the Child Nutrition Services department within WCPSS.
