Job Description
Performance Foodservice (PFG) is a leading broadline food distributor renowned for its commitment to supporting a diverse range of local customers across the United States. The company serves various sectors, including independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. PFG is distinguished by its team of dedicated professionals, including sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and other experts who work closely with customers to enhance operations, assist with menu development, improve product selection, and devise effective operational strategies. This collaborative approach enables PFG not only to deliver excellent food products but also to empower independent restaurant owners and other clients to achieve their business goals and elevate their customer service experience.
The company prides itself on fostering a safe and inclusive working environment founded on a culture of rewards, recognition, and respect. PFG offers competitive pay of $80,000 to $100,000 annually, comprehensive benefits starting on day one, including health and wellness programs, an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, 401K employer matching, education assistance, paid time off, and numerous other perks. The organization is committed to providing growth opportunities, ensuring employees develop their skills while performing essential work that supports America’s intricate food distribution system.
This specific role is an entry-level driver training position designed for individuals aiming to develop the necessary skills and experience to operate tractor trailers or straight trucks for intrastate and interstate deliveries. The driver trainee will gain hands-on experience on local routes, over-the-road (OTR) long-distance hauls, shuttle runs, and overnight deliveries. Central to this role is the emphasis on safety, ensuring all deliveries are made in strict adherence to company policies and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
The driver trainee plays a critical role in maintaining professional communication with customers, vendors, and colleagues, thereby providing excellent service and ensuring all duties are completed following preferred methods and customer service standards. The position requires teamwork within the broader department and company, with the flexibility to perform additional duties as needed to support company objectives.
Trainees are required to successfully complete PFG’s Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program, which includes thorough documentation and compliance with all training requirements. On-the-job training involves ride-alongs with experienced driver trainers, where trainees assist and absorb hands-on delivery procedures.
Key responsibilities include conducting safety checks of vehicles pre- and post-trip, inspecting both tractors and trailers to meet DOT and company safety standards, securing freight properly, accurately completing necessary paperwork, and ensuring proper delivery and unloading of products. Drivers must also monitor for damaged goods, verify orders with customers, collect payments when applicable, and maintain cleanliness and orderliness in work areas and vehicles.
To be successful in this role, candidates must have a valid CDL Class A license, be at least 21 years old, and meet all state licensing and certification requirements. Candidates should possess a clean motor vehicle report spanning the last three years, pass a post-offer drug test, road test, and have or be able to attain a valid DOT health card. Physical stamina is required as the role involves manual lifting and the use of equipment such as two-wheelers and lift gates to handle products typically weighing between 60 to 90 pounds.
Performance Foodservice is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion, providing equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or other protected characteristics. The company complies with all local, state, and federal laws, ensuring fair and transparent employment practices.
Joining Performance Foodservice as a driver trainee offers a rewarding career path with comprehensive training, competitive compensation, and the chance to contribute meaningfully to the critical supply chain that sustains the food service industry nationwide.
