Job Description
Compass Group is a leading global foodservice and support services company dedicated to delivering high-quality dining experiences across various sectors including education, healthcare, corporate, and sports venues. With a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community engagement, Compass Group operates a broad portfolio of brands offering diverse culinary options tailored to meet the unique needs of each client. One of its premier divisions, Chartwells Higher Ed, specializes in providing exceptional dining services on college and university campuses to enhance student life and foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for all stakeholders.
Located at the UF Admin-Racquet Club Dining Center in Gainesville, FL, Compass Group seeks to expand its dynamic culinary team by hiring a Full-Time Sous Chef. This is an excellent opportunity for culinary professionals eager to advance their careers within a company that values teamwork, creativity, and professional growth. The position is hourly, with competitive pay ranging from $18.00 to $25.00 per hour, reflecting experience and proficiency. The schedule involves morning, afternoon, and weekend shifts as necessary, accommodating the busy demands of campus dining operations.
The Sous Chef will play a pivotal role in supporting the Executive Chef by preparing and cooking food following approved recipes and production standards. This role requires not only culinary expertise but also leadership abilities to oversee and coordinate the activities of cooks and other food-service associates. The Sous Chef is expected to assume responsibility for kitchen operations in the absence of the Executive Chef, ensuring seamless service and adherence to quality standards.
The role involves supervising hourly associates, including interviewing, scheduling, payroll management, training, counseling, and performance evaluations, fostering a positive work environment that promotes staff development and a culture of excellence. The Sous Chef will also be responsible for maintaining strict compliance with corporate, state, and federal food safety and sanitation procedures, ensuring all foods are stored, handled, and served properly to uphold the highest standards of quality and safety.
As part of the daily responsibilities, the Sous Chef will ensure that all food preparation complies with portion control guidelines and that serving temperatures are consistently maintained. Additionally, the employee must maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment, supplies, and utensils to meet health and safety regulations, which is critical to providing a safe dining environment.
Customer interaction is also a key element; the Sous Chef will handle customer complaints in a friendly, service-oriented manner, communicating effectively with both customers and supervisors to resolve issues promptly. An in-depth knowledge of daily menu items is required to assist both associates and customers in understanding food offerings and to contribute to an exceptional dining experience.
Inventory management is critical to this position, involving monitoring product deliveries, tracking food production, consumption, and waste, and reporting supply shortages to the supervisor. This systematic approach helps optimize kitchen operations and minimize waste, aligning with Compass Group’s commitment to sustainability.
Compass Group offers an inclusive, diverse workplace dedicated to the professional and personal growth of its associates. Employees benefit from competitive wages, a robust benefits package, and perks such as Instapay through the One @ Work app, making financial management more accessible. Full-time associates enjoy comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and retirement options, alongside wellness programs, training and development opportunities, and additional voluntary benefits like pet insurance and identity theft protection.
This role is ideal for culinary professionals with existing chef experience who are ready to step into a leadership position within a supportive and fast-paced environment. Compass Group’s dedication to equality and fair treatment ensures a positive, empowering workplace for all employees, emphasizing the importance of ability and achievement over background or identity. The Sous Chef will join a team committed to excellence, growth, and making a meaningful impact every day in the educational community it serves.
