The role of Gourmet Chef at Giant Eagle’s Central Kitchen and Market District operations is a vital position that encompasses a variety of responsibilities centered around food preparation, quality control, merchandising, and customer service excellence. Gourmet Chefs at Giant Eagle play a critical role in maintaining high food safety standards while promoting continuous education about food for both associates and customers. This position requires a deep understanding of culinary arts, food safety regulations, and retail food service operations. With 3 to 5 years of experience, candidates are expected to actively support a culture of safety, demonstrate advanced culinary knowledge, and contribute to the profitability and future growth of the business. Job Requirements

  • Serv-Safe certification a plus
  • Lifting requirement up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to follow strict recipes and merchandising guidelines
  • Commitment to a culture of safety including food and team member safety
  • Ability to participate in training sessions and quarterly business reviews
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse and inclusive environment

Job Qualifications

  • Experience of 3 to 5 years in culinary roles
  • Advanced culinary degree or bachelor's degree desired
  • Culinary awards or accreditation is a plus
  • Food safety awareness
  • Associates degree desired
  • Serv-Safe certification is a plus

Job Duties

  • Actively support a culture of safety which includes but is not limited to food safety, team member safety and customer safety
  • Display a commitment to learn about food and share food knowledge with fellow team members and customers
  • Actively demonstrate appropriate suggestive selling techniques and provide active sampling opportunities when appropriate
  • Actively participate in and promote an environment which embraces diversity, inclusion and respect for team members, customers, vendors and the community
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by ensuring that all food safety, food holding, temperature and OSHA standards are met
  • In conjunction with the kitchen manager/prepared foods manager, manage inventories weekly, prepare food ingredients and products that allow for efficient management of the business, assist department manager with monthly inventory taking process
  • Meet or exceed budgeted guidelines for food cost percentage, minimize product waste and ensure that production is followed strictly on a day-to-day basis
