This job opening is for a Chef on a 10-month basis with a salary ranging between $35,005 and $44,897. The position is under the general supervision of the Director of Food and Nutrition Services. Job Requirements

  • Completion of a two-year college in Culinary Arts or apprenticeship program
  • Minimum five years of relevant experience in quantity food preparation or supervisory role in institutional food service
  • Must hold valid ServSafe Certification for instructor/proctor/examiner
  • Must have valid driver's license and insurability if driving is part of duties
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Willingness to perform occasional evening and weekend work
  • Strong organizational, supervisory, and communication skills
  • Compliance with applicable food safety regulations and standards
  • Ability to work independently and lead a team effectively

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year college program or apprenticeship in Culinary Arts
  • At least five years of experience in quantity food preparation as a chef or food production supervisor, preferably in institutional food service
  • Strong human relations and supervision skills
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal food program regulations
  • Ability to develop recipes and menus, including cost analysis and presentation
  • Proficiency in conducting training and educational workshops
  • Capability to plan and manage food production operations
  • Effective communication skills both oral and written
  • Experience preparing reports and using business software
  • Valid ServSafe Certification for instructor, proctor, or examiner
  • Valid driver's license if driving is required

Job Duties

  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures related to the Nutrition Services Department
  • Conduct recipe development, focusing on nutritious menu choices and efficient commodity use, including crediting, scaling, and costing
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting workshops and in-service presentations on food preparation, presentation, production planning, food safety, and sanitation
  • Conduct product evaluations and calculations to verify regulatory compliance and recommend corrections
  • Plan, organize, control and evaluate the work of assigned personnel including student and staff meals, catering, and special feedings
  • Provide training in food preparation and distribution maintaining high standards of quality and presentation
  • Monitor and train staff to ensure compliance with USDA, VDOE, food safety and sanitation regulations
  • Work with Nutrition Specialist and other personnel to execute special student activities, menus, and program marketing
  • Interact with students to gain feedback for meals provided
  • Assist production personnel in forecasting and ordering
  • Evaluate equipment and tools used in production and food distribution
  • Prepare reports and presentations
  • Communicate with administrators, personnel, and outside organizations to coordinate activities and resolve issues
  • Assist in planning and openings of new or modernized food facilities
  • Perform occasional evening and weekend work
  • Perform other related duties as required
