The Chaplain role at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital presents a vital opportunity to provide spiritual care and support specifically tailored to seriously ill pediatric patients and their families. This position is part-time, consisting of 20 hours per week during daytime shifts. As a chaplain in a pediatric palliative care unit, you will provide comfort, guidance, and compassionate care during profoundly challenging life events, including end-of-life support and bereavement assistance. The chaplain becomes an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, working closely with nursing, medical, and support staff to ensure spiritual needs are met, respecting diversity in race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and religious or philosophical perspectives.

This role requires strong empathy, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build trusted spiritual care relationships. The chaplain advocates on behalf of patients by educating the healthcare team about specific spiritual, religious, or cultural needs that influence patient care and treatment. This position also involves assisting in the planning and implementation of spiritual support services within the organization and the surrounding community. The role demands maintaining confidentiality and compliance with policies related to Protected Health Information (PHI).

Job Requirements

Master's degree from an accredited theological seminary
Completion of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education
Ecclesiastical endorsement or ordination/commissioning
Certified Chaplain by the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. within 2 years preferred
3+ years experience providing spiritual care in a clinical hospital setting preferred
Experience with end-of-life, trauma, or bereavement preferred
Ability to document visits and calls in an electronic medical record
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams
Comply with policies related to Protected Health Information (PHI)

Job Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field from an accredited theological seminary
Completion of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education
Certified Chaplain by the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. through the Association of Professional Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or a similar group with the goal of obtaining certification preferred within 2 years
Ecclesiastical endorsement or ordination/commissioning
3+ years experience providing spiritual care in a clinical hospital setting preferred
Experience with end-of-life, trauma, bereavement, pediatric or adult care preferred
Working knowledge of Windows Operating System
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
Documentation of visits and calls in the electronic medical record within the appropriate timeframe
Crisis intervention, spiritual care, spiritual assessment, problem solving, critical thinking
Ability to provide spiritual leadership and consultation in a high stress environment and work with all levels of the organization

Job Duties

Provide effective spiritual support that contributes to the wellbeing of each patient, family member, visitor, volunteer, or employee
Act as an integral part of the health care team, including interacting with nursing, medical, and support staff to ensure the appropriate levels of service are met and delivered in a timely manner
Provide spiritual care that respects diversity relative to differences in race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, philosophies, religious perspectives etc
Advocate for patients by educating staff about specific religious, spiritual or cultural needs and issues of patients and families which affect their care and treatment
Appropriate use of one’s professional authority as a chaplain
Establish trusted spiritual care relationships with empathy, openness, and respect
Assist with the planning and implementation of services that provide spiritual support to the organization and community
