Job Description

The Anchorage School District (ASD) is a prominent educational institution committed to delivering quality education and support services to a diverse student population in Alaska. The Food Service/Central Kitchen Lead position within ASD represents an essential leadership role in the Student Nutrition Department, specifically at the Central Kitchen. This role is designed for individuals with extensive experience in institutional food production, capable of managing high volume cooking, baking, and meal packaging activities efficiently. The Central Kitchen Lead functions directly as an assistant to the Central Kitchen Manager, overseeing day-to-day food production operations and providing supervision and training to a large workgroup of kitchen staff.

This position is full-time with a 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent), working 8 hours per day, 9 months per year. The salary range for this role falls between $22.67 and $23.77 per hour, dependent on experience. Employment in this position includes membership in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), offering essential retirement benefits.

Key responsibilities of the Central Kitchen Lead include acting as the frontline supervisor responsible for employee training, orientation, and skill development. They coordinate scheduling of breaks, lunch periods, and production tasks to ensure smooth kitchen operations. Collaboration with the Central Kitchen Manager is critical to maintain strict quality assurance and food safety standards. This role requires hands-on involvement in baking, cooking, and assembly-line production activities while ensuring compliance with sanitation and food safety regulations.

The role also involves managing inventory control, record keeping for supplies and products, and adjusting recipes to accommodate different batch sizes. Physical demands of the role include frequent standing, walking, lifting items up to 40 pounds, and other repetitive tasks associated with institutional kitchen environments. The position requires the ability to handle stressful situations, communicate effectively with diverse groups, and make sound decisions under pressure.

Job Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of the education requirement
  • Five years of experience in institutional type, high production, large volume, assembly line work environment
  • Two years of previous experience supervising or directing large work groups in a kitchen environment
  • Must be able to work effectively with and interpret standardized recipes
  • Must be able to prepare and interpret simple reports
  • Must be proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication
  • Must attend the eight-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety course and pass the associated examination within 21 calendar days from date of hire into the position

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of previous experience supervising or directing large work groups in a kitchen environment
  • Proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication
  • Ability to prepare and interpret simple reports
  • Ability to work effectively with and interpret standardized recipes
  • Successful completion of the ASD Serving It Safe food safety course within 21 days from date of hire
  • Experience working in the Anchorage School District Student Nutrition Central Kitchen preferred

Job Duties

  • Functions as the front line supervisor for all employees as designated by the Student Nutrition Central Kitchen Manager, provides input for employee evaluations, and reports to the manager for daily operations and tasks
  • Trains and orients new staff, assigns and works with mentors for new employees, works with staff to improve and develop their skills
  • Responsible for scheduling breaks, lunch periods, production time, and packaging allocations for Central Kitchen food service staff, and requests additional work hours for employees as necessary
  • Participates in operational meetings with the Student Nutrition Central Kitchen Manager
  • Works closely with the Student Nutrition Center manager to establish and maintain a strict quality assurance program
  • Leads in baking and cooking activities in a high-volume, repetitive, assembly line, institutional-type work environment
  • Responsible for the timely, accurate, safe, and cost effective production and packaging of all food in the central kitchen
