The Residential Driver role at GFL Environmental is a critical position focused on the safe, efficient, and customer-oriented collection of solid waste and recyclables. This role involves operating specialized trucks and equipment designed for various waste collection methods including side-load, rear-load, and recycling pickup. The driver is responsible for following prescribed procedures to ensure reliable pickup routes, proper loading and compaction of refuse, and adherence to rigorous safety standards. Additionally, the driver maintains thorough documentation and vehicle upkeep, communicates effectively with supervisors and customers, and supports efforts to improve route efficiency.

This full-time position requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a minimum of one year of commercial driving experience or equivalent CDL training. Candidates with a high school diploma or GED are preferred. The role demands a strong knowledge of vehicle operation and safety protocols, the ability to identify hazardous waste, and physical stamina to handle waste containers and perform route duties in various weather conditions. Attention to detail, professionalism, and the ability to work both independently and in coordination with team members are essential.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License
  • Minimum one (1) years of commercial driving experience or CDL school certificate
  • Must be able to meet relevant criteria for safety sensitive functions according to company standards
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to safely drive the truck and operate the equipment

Job Duties

  • Operate a residential or recycling collection, side-load and/or rear-load truck and ancillary equipment to collect waste and recyclables
  • Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the vehicle
  • Operate equipment to compact trash into the truck
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and reports
  • Communicate mechanical problems to mechanic and supervisor immediately
  • Maintain route quality standards
  • Follow all safety protocols and regulations
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness
  • Identify and tag prohibited waste items
  • Manage assigned helpers if applicable
  • Report accidents or incidents immediately
  • Exhibit professional demeanor and appearance
  • Maintain accurate service records
  • Maintain inventory and recommend purchases
  • Work to improve routing efficiencies
  • Attend safety and branch meetings
  • Perform other duties as requested by management
