The Sous Chef position at the Catering and Events Commissary (known as C&E) is a full-time, exempt role that plays an integral part in managing and executing all operational and functional aspects of the Catering and Events kitchen. The Sous Chef is responsible for directing the kitchen team, ensuring high standards are upheld in all back-of-house activities, and driving profitability through efficient service and food cost control. This leadership position requires a hands-on approach, where the Sous Chef leads by example, mentoring cooks, and taking an active role in menu planning and facility maintenance. They promote a team-oriented atmosphere focused on cooperation, morale, and continuous improvement. The role demands strong communication skills to work effectively within the leadership team and manage staff schedules, training, and daily tasks. Job Requirements

  • Culinary school or equivalent work experience
  • minimum 3 years of management experience
  • ServSafe certification required
  • Illinois Manager Food Sanitation certification required
  • Illinois Allergen certification required
  • ability to handle stress under pressure
  • willingness to maintain a clean, healthy, and safe working environment
  • ability to coordinate multiple activities with attention to detail
  • ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • ability to be flexible with job demands
  • ability to operate and use all necessary kitchen equipment
  • physical ability to move or handle equipment weighing 0-50 pounds
  • ability to work varied hours as business dictates
  • ability to stand for up to 8-10 hours per day
  • tolerance for potential allergens including peanut products, egg, dairy, gluten, soy, seafood, and shellfish

Job Qualifications

Job Duties
