Job Description

Amherst College is a prestigious liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, known for its commitment to academic excellence and fostering a diverse and inclusive community. Established as a highly selective institution, Amherst College has taken significant leadership roles in successfully diversifying its student body across various dimensions, including racial, socio-economic, and geographic factors. The institution strives to enrich the educational experience not only through its diverse student population but also by cultivating a faculty, administration, and staff that mirror this broad commitment to inclusivity and diversity. This approach helps Amherst College maintain its reputation as a forward-thinking and inclusive institution dedicated to excellence in education and campus life.

The Casual Event Support position at Amherst College is a part-time, casual role located on the Amherst campus. This role offers an hourly wage ranging from $20 to $22, commensurate with relevant education, training, and experience, among other considerations. As a casual role, it does not include benefits, but it plays a crucial part in supporting the smooth execution of special events and other operational needs on campus. The college emphasizes that its staff benefits package is competitive and comprehensive for those in eligible positions.

This role involves providing critical support to the Special Services and Custodial Services departments by assisting with the setup of special events, facilitating office moves, and offering general trucking services both on and off campus. The Casual Event Support staff member acts as a secondary contact person responsible for obtaining detailed information from various customers about these events and activities. Additionally, this individual is tasked with entering the gathered data into the facility’s work order system and managing the tracking of materials and labor hours. Flexibility is key for this role, as work hours vary from week to week with the position limited to a maximum of 19 hours per week.

Because the work is integral to campus life and student needs, the schedule can include nights, weekends, and other non-standard hours to accommodate special events or urgent requests. The role demands physical activity such as transporting and setting up tables, chairs, and equipment, requiring a combination of stamina, organization, and customer service skills. The ideal candidate will be someone who enjoys varied duties, working collaboratively with colleagues, and contributing to an inclusive atmosphere on campus. Amherst College values applicants who are committed to maintaining a welcoming community and who can adapt to a dynamic work environment in support of both operational needs and special campus events.
