Berkeley Dining operates under the Division of Student Affairs and is a key part of the Residential Student Services Programs portfolio. It is a self-operated dining program focused on culinary excellence and social responsibility, supporting the living and learning environment of its customers. Serving over 12,000 meal plan holders, Berkeley Dining offers more than 5 million meals annually across 14 facilities. These include residential "all you care to eat" dining halls, retail "a la carte" dining venues, training table services, early childhood meal production, and catering. The program runs 7 days a week, 17 hours a day, employing approximately 450 full and part-time staff members as well as around 400 Cal student workers.
The available position is for a Cashier within Berkeley Dining. This role plays a crucial part in delivering exceptional customer service and ensuring smooth operations at the point-of-sale systems. The cashier is responsible for processing payments securely and accurately, adhering to university and departmental cash handling policies, and maintaining the financial integrity of transactions. The role also involves direct customer interaction, requiring a friendly and professional demeanor to meet customer needs effectively. Key responsibilities include controlling cash transactions, assisting customers with payment options, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards, and supporting the general operation of Berkeley Dining facilities. This full-time, partial-year position offers an hourly wage starting at $21.92 and includes eligibility for comprehensive UC benefits. The position requires working cooperatively within a team environment to help Berkeley Dining achieve its objectives while ensuring a positive, inclusive experience for all patrons and staff members.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Cash handling experience in retail
- Basic English proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Availability to work partial-year full-time schedule
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
- Compliance with University of California's cash handling policies
Job Qualifications
- Cash handling experience in a retail operation
- Public contact skills and experience
- Basic English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Bank teller experience preferred
- Previous food service experience in retail preferred
- ServSafe or Food Service Handler Certification preferred
Job Duties
- Follow cash handling procedures as outlined in the University of California Business and Finance Bulletin BUS-49 and departmental and campus cash handling policy
- Follow money handling procedures specific to Internal Audit and campus Cashier
- Follow proper cash handling and other payment options procedures including custody of daily money bags, record and reconcile sales on designated forms, and secure sales and credit card receipts
- Accurately operate the electronic point-of-sale (cash register), including counting customers' change, providing receipts, and correctly processing card transactions
- Establish and maintain positive relations with customers, listen and resolve customer needs, and report issues to management
- Maintain cleanliness of work areas including sweeping, mopping, wiping surfaces, and proper disposal of trash, compost, and recyclables
- Ensure security at public entrances by controlling unauthorized access and monitoring for unauthorized removal of food or supplies
- Set up, prepare, replenish, restock, price, and distribute food, beverage, and non-food products
- Follow safety and sanitation principles in food service
- Assist in professional development and perform other duties as assigned
