The role of Cafeteria Assistant Manager at IDEA Public Schools is a vital leadership position within the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) team at the campus level. This role assists the Cafeteria Manager in overseeing daily cafeteria operations to ensure that every student receives nutritious and appealing meals that meet the rigorous food and nutrition standards set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and relevant state agencies. The Cafeteria Assistant Manager is responsible for managing food orders, monitoring food quality, maintaining sales records, processing payments, handling inventory management, and providing excellent customer service to students and parents. This position plays a critical role in promoting healthy eating habits within the school community while supporting IDEA's broader mission of making College For All a reality. The Assistant Manager also supports staff development and team leadership to foster a motivated, efficient, and compliant cafeteria operation.
This position is hourly with a competitive wage range starting at $17.92 per hour for entry-level experience and up to $22.40 per hour for candidates with extensive experience. Additionally, the role is eligible for performance bonuses tied to team outcomes and goal achievements. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 2 years experience in food service, restaurant, or hospitality industry
- Leadership experience preferred
- Valid Texas driver’s license
- Ability to motivate, delegate, and lead a team
- Knowledge of food production methods, materials, equipment, and processes
- Strong understanding of food safety and sanitation practices
- Ability to understand and interpret data such as charts and graphs
- Ability to handle stress and meet deadlines
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Computer literacy including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel)
- Ability to follow verbal and written directions and ask for clarification
- Demonstrated problem solving, adaptability, and flexibility
- Good mathematical skills and basic finance understanding
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- 2+ years experience in food service, restaurant, or hospitality industry required
- Leadership experience preferred
- Valid Texas driver’s license required
- Valid Food Handler’s Card preferred (willing to obtain within first 30 days)
Job Duties
- Direct the team to execute the approved menu 100 percent every day
- Ensure every student participating in the meal program takes a reimbursable meal
- Ensure all methods of counting and claiming are compliant
- Observe that counting and claiming is happening at time of service
- Check that all counts of student meals are accurate
- Enter all counts correctly into internal trackers and PrimeroEdge
- Recruit top notch FSS and FSS Sub candidates from the area
- Hold weekly employee huddles
- Review and submit employee’s timesheets every Tuesday
- Use the Staff Development Cycle to provide formal feedback on work performance and growth opportunities
- Development of Cafeteria Assistant Manager for promotion potential
- FSS with leadership potential into candidates for promotion
- Conduct Breakfast in the Class audits with 100 percent compliance accuracy
- Report recipe/menu errors immediately
- Use campus parent functions to promote meal program participation
- Identify students bringing lunch from home and report findings
- Refer to Healthy Kids Here self-assessment checklist
- Promote consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables
- Rotate milk to ensure freshest product
- Decorate serving line with appealing nutritional signage
- Implement and maintain salad bar for College Prep students
- Follow designated menu daily
- Follow state food service policies and procedures
- Track and implement changes in compliance and policies
- Correct non-compliant issues
- Reach out to HQ CNP for guidance
- Complete food production records daily
