The Business Manager position at Amherst College is a full-time, year-round role with an expected salary range of $85,000 to $95,000 annually. The salary is commensurate with the candidate's education, training, experience, and other business considerations. Reporting to the Director of Dining Services and working closely with the Assistant Director of Dining, the Business Manager plays an integral role in the operational and strategic management of Dining Services. This includes overseeing administrative functions that support dining operations encompassing service, kitchen, catering, and retail units. Part of the Dining Leadership Team, the Business Manager coordinates financial, systems, and human resources functions to align operational workflows with departmental goals. The role is essential personnel during campus closures or inclement weather, highlighting its importance in maintaining efficient dining services under all circumstances.

Key responsibilities include providing strategic and operational oversight for financial processes, payroll compliance, workforce planning, talent lifecycle management, training and compliance monitoring, and collaboration with central administrative departments such as Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology. The Business Manager supervises support staff, including a Financial Analyst and Dining Systems Analyst, ensuring data-informed decision-making and operational efficiency. This position supports payroll processes, recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, compliance with food safety standards, and preparation for audits and inspections. The role also involves project management for dining-related events, coordinating administrative and financial logistics to guarantee successful execution. Job Duties

  • Lead and manage administrative functions supporting Dining Services operations including financial processes systems and workforce administration
  • Partner with dining leadership to support service kitchen catering and retail operations through effective business practices and data informed decision making
  • Oversee and optimize operational workflows ensuring efficiency and alignment with institutional policies
  • Ensure payroll compliance with institutional policies and applicable labor laws in collaboration with HR and Payroll offices
  • Support workforce planning efforts including staffing models scheduling considerations and labor changes
  • Monitor and analyze workforce data to identify trends and recommend improvements
  • Oversee recruitment onboarding and offboarding processes for Dining Services staff and partner with hiring managers to ensure timely and effective hiring practices
  • Manage and monitor training compliance including food safety training ensuring employees meet required certifications and institutional standards
  • Serve as a key liaison between Dining Services and central administrative departments while maintaining a non HR functional role
  • Provide leadership coaching and performance management for direct reports
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives and continuous improvement efforts within Dining Services
  • Supervise and provide direction to the Financial Analyst and Dining Systems Analyst
  • Collaborate on budgeting forecasting and financial reporting processes to support operational and strategic planning
  • Ensure integrity and effective use of dining systems including POS and operational platforms
  • Provide project management and programmatic support for dining related events coordinating administrative financial and staffing logistics to support successful execution of events and initiatives
