The position of Bus Operator with the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District presents an exciting opportunity to join a dedicated team playing a crucial role in daily public transportation. Working under general supervision, the Bus Operator is responsible for safely operating a variety of transit vehicles along assigned routes originating in Santa Rosa, Novato, or San Rafael. This full-time role offers an hourly wage ranging initially from $31.29 to $36.81, with the opportunity for salary increases post-training and the potential to earn a sign-on bonus. The Bus Operator role demands exceptional skills in safety, reliability, and customer service, as incumbents transport passengers along fixed routes, collect fares accurately, assist mobility-impaired individuals through the use of lifts, and complete necessary operational and incident reports.

The role includes participation in the Golden Gate Transit Training Program, an apprenticeship lasting approximately twelve weeks. During training, employees work Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., earning $31.29 per hour with benefits not included. Upon successful completion, operators receive a pay increase to $33.13 per hour plus full benefits and will enter a 120-day probationary period with regularly scheduled assignments. In addition to competitive pay, the District enhances employee compensation with a $1,000 sign-on bonus upon completion of training and an additional $1,000 bonus on the one-year anniversary of employment.

Bus Operators are classified as "Safety Sensitive" under U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration regulations. This classification mandates compliance with pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, and return-to-duty drug and alcohol testing policies to ensure passenger and employee safety.

This role requires a clean and responsible driving record, confirmed by a DMV K4 printout with no recent reckless driving, DUI violations, license suspensions, or disqualifying incidents in the past several years. Operators must possess and maintain a valid commercial driver's license and comply with all applicable safety and health regulations while fostering positive working relationships with District staff, customers, vendors, and the public.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Clean DMV K4 printout with no reckless driving or DUI violations in the last seven years
  • No more than two moving violations and no at-fault accidents within the last three years
  • No license suspension, revocation or probation for three years prior to the application date
  • Must pass pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol tests
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the training period
  • Must submit a valid DMV K4 printout at the time of application
  • Must complete a 120-day probationary period following training

Job Duties

  • Transports passengers along assigned routes, making designated stops as required or requested
  • Uses the fare box to accurately collect fares, issues transfers and gives general information
  • Completes reports on patron count, non-scheduled mileage, vehicular deficiencies, fare box, accidents and other reports as required
  • Operates automatic lift on buses and assists passengers in wheelchairs, those using crutches or walkers, or who have speech or mental difficulty
  • Ensures that Driver's license and all other documents required of a commercial licensee are maintained and are current and valid
  • Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned
  • Regular and reliable attendance and performance are required
