The library boasts a vast collection of over 2.5 million print and digital items, serving a diverse population of residents, students, and workers in Jersey City. Jersey City itself is the largest city in Hudson County and the second-largest in New Jersey, renowned for its vibrant diversity, with the community representing over sixteen languages including English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Tagalog, Gujarati, Marathi, Igbo, Portuguese, and others. The JCFPL staff reflects this cultural and linguistic variety, fostering an inclusive work environment and a dedicated commitment to serving the unique needs of its community.
The Building Maintenance Worker / Security Guard position at the Priscilla Gardner Main Library is a full-time role, offering a salary range of $39,942 to $40,986 annually. Reporting directly to the Building Superintendent, this entry-level job demands a combination of physical maintenance skills and security duties to ensure the safety and upkeep of the library facilities. Scheduled work hours are 35 per week, typically between 6 am and 8 pm, with evenings and weekends as needed, aligning with the operational demands of the library.
This role involves varied tasks, including cleaning, minor repairs, grounds maintenance, and patrolling library premises to protect both the public and the library's property. The position requires candidates to obtain or already hold a Security Officer Registration Act (SORA) license within the first 45 days of employment. Responsibilities also include maintaining order among groups of people on the property and enforcing library rules with verbal warnings or actions when necessary. Knowledge of minor building repairs, equipment use, and safety practices plays a crucial part in performing daily duties effectively.
Employees of JCFPL enjoy comprehensive benefits designed to promote health, financial security, and work-life balance. Full-time employees are eligible for medical, dental, and vision coverage starting 60 days after employment begins. Life and AD&D insurance, pension plans, and a 403b retirement savings plan offer long-term financial security. The library values safety and community, making this position an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about both facility maintenance and public service within a culturally rich urban environment.
