The Maintenance Lead II position at Bellingham Technical College is a hands-on working leadership role that plays an essential part in ensuring the campus remains safe, functional, and operational at all times. This position combines technical expertise with the responsibility of leading and coordinating a team of maintenance personnel to handle a broad spectrum of repair, maintenance, remodeling, and construction projects. The role requires proficiency in various skilled trades including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, and mechanical work. The incumbent will have the authority to make independent decisions on work priorities and methods, utilizing leadership skills to effectively communicate across all levels of the campus community.
As the Maintenance Lead II, you will perform skilled tasks related to inspecting, repairing, installing, and maintaining the physical facilities and utilities of the college. The job involves preventative maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment such as electrical motors, HVAC systems, kitchen and laundry machines, as well as structural repairs including windows, doors, floors, and painted surfaces. You will also be responsible for evaluating building systems such as plumbing, electrical, refrigeration, and low-voltage control systems including alarm and access controls. Coordination with other maintenance mechanics and subcontractors is crucial to ensure efficient resolution of any issues.
The position requires strong decision-making skills to independently prioritize and organize multiple demands on ongoing operations. The Maintenance Lead II will oversee sub-contracted maintenance and construction efforts, prepare preliminary cost estimates for projects, and assist in ensuring compliance with life safety systems. Supervisory duties include leading journey-level trades workers and helpers, training support staff, and reporting status updates to supervisors.
Furthermore, this role demands physical stamina and dexterity to perform hands-on work that involves lifting, bending, climbing, and working in various weather conditions. The safety of the college community is paramount, and the Maintenance Lead II acts as a key figure in emergency response efforts, providing a visible presence to safeguard campus facilities and personnel. This is a full-time, on-site role with a salary of $7,226 monthly, typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The position offers a competitive Washington State benefits package including leave, insurance, retirement options, and more.

Job Requirements
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic and/or electrical trade or equivalent
- 2 years experience in journey level repair with staff direction in a multi-building campus or organization
- 4 years of experience in equipment repair
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Successful completion of job-related background check as required by Washington State law
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods
- Use of safety equipment
- Visual and manual dexterity to perform job functions with or without accommodation
Job Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic or electrical trade or equivalent journey status
- Minimum of 2 years experience at journey-level repair with staff direction in a multi-building campus or organization
- At least 4 years of experience in equipment repair
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Strong communication skills in English both verbal and written
- Ability to operate maintenance tools and equipment
- Detail-oriented with good time management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proficient in use of safety equipment and procedures
Job Duties
- Perform maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural systems of buildings and utility distribution
- Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on mechanical equipment including electrical drive motors, laundry, kitchen, and air-conditioning systems
- Repair windows, doors, screens, floors, floor coverings, and painted surfaces
- Inspect and initiate corrective action on building and facility systems such as plumbing, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, and low-voltage controls
- Coordinate and call in other mechanics as necessary to resolve issues
- Operate power tools, automotive equipment, and forklifts for service and material handling
- Assist in repair and remodeling of buildings including framing walls, installing countertops, and painting interior and exterior surfaces
