The role of Life Safety System Coordinator within YNHHS is critical to maintaining the safety infrastructure of the hospital environment. This full-time position is responsible for the performance and ongoing maintenance of multiple fire and life safety systems throughout the healthcare facility. The coordinator conducts thorough inspections, drills, and monitoring activities to ensure compliance with various regulatory bodies, including the Joint Commission and the Department of Public Health. By participating in multiple safety-focused committees such as Emergency Management, Environment of Care, Occupational Health, and Facilities Safety, the coordinator contributes expert knowledge and leadership to uphold the hospital’s safety standards.

Key responsibilities include conducting scheduled hazard surveillance inspections across all hospital areas using federal, state, and local fire and building codes as guidance. The coordinator prepares detailed inspection reports highlighting findings and shares these with management teams and department representatives to remediate non-compliance issues. This role also involves coordinating third-party vendors to perform inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire suppression systems, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and related safety equipment in accordance with nationally recognized standards like NFPA, IRI, and UL.

The coordinator plays an active role in fire emergency preparedness by managing and documenting fire alarm responses, hosting fire drills compliant with state and Joint Commission criteria, and engaging in annual safety performance reporting. Construction project plan reviews, progress inspections, and approval of fire system impairments and hot work permits are also integral duties ensuring that new or renovated hospital spaces meet strict life safety codes.

Excellent communication and organizational skills are essential for this role, as the coordinator must collaborate with multiple stakeholders, including internal management, clinical teams, external vendors, fire marshals, and insurance carriers. The position demands a professional capable of problem-solving complex safety issues, managing comprehensive documentation, and providing expert advice on real-time fire and life safety questions raised within the clinical environment.
