This position offers a competitive annual base salary ranging from $51,632 to $92,912 depending on the grade level. In addition to base pay, the USBP provides up to $60,000 in additional financial incentives, including recruitment bonuses and retention incentives tied to assignment locations and continued employment. Selected candidates will undergo approximately six months of rigorous training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. Duty locations are diverse and include numerous mission-critical border sectors such as Big Bend, Del Rio, El Paso, Laredo, and San Diego, among others. Job Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
  • Ability to pass a background check and security clearance
  • Age under 40 at time of referral unless exempt due to prior federal law enforcement service
  • Successful completion of six months of intensive Border Patrol Academy training
  • Ability to speak and read English and Spanish, with Spanish proficiency training provided
  • Willingness to relocate to mission-critical duty locations as assigned

Job Qualifications

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating ability to take charge and make sound decisions
  • Bachelor’s degree or completion of a full four-year course of study from an accredited college or university
  • Combination of general work experience and college education
  • One year of specialized work experience showing skills to make sound judgments in the use of firearms and deal effectively with people in law enforcement matters
  • Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one full year of graduate-level education in law enforcement-related fields
  • Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience may qualify for higher grade levels

Job Duties

  • Detect and question people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws
  • Inspect documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations
  • Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers
  • Maintain surveillance from covert positions including using infrared scopes during night operations
  • Interpret and follow tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
  • Perform farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks
  • Patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways using various government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles
