Job Description
The Modern is a Michelin-starred contemporary American restaurant located at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Renowned for its refined yet unexpectedly playful dishes, The Modern highlights exceptional ingredients and seasonality through two distinctive culinary experiences: a bold tasting or prix fixe menu served in the elegant dining room and a vibrant à la carte menu offered in the lively Bar Room. This restaurant embraces innovation in American cuisine while demonstrating a deep respect for classic techniques and quality, making it a premier destination for food enthusiasts and cultural connoisseurs alike. The establishment is part of Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group, known for delivering outstanding guest experiences rooted in hospitality excellence. Besides its celebrated Michelin two-star rating, The Modern is also honored with a Three Star review from the New York Times, four James Beard Awards, and the prestigious Grand Award from Wine Spectator, further affirming its status as a world-class dining venue.
The Modern’s location within the Museum of Modern Art provides a unique ambiance that combines exquisite culinary delights with inspiring artistry. Alongside the main dining area, the Terrace Cafe on the museum's sixth floor presents a casual yet vibrant setting where guests can enjoy sharable plates, salads, sandwiches, and desserts while taking in breathtaking views of Midtown Manhattan. Additionally, Cafe 2, situated on the second floor, offers a family-friendly environment featuring rustic Italian dishes including handmade pastas, artisanal cheeses, and kid-friendly classics. This multi-concept approach ensures The Modern caters to a diverse clientele, from fine dining patrons to museum visitors seeking lighter fare in a relaxed setting.
The role of Beverage Manager is a vital leadership position within The Modern and the broader Museum of Modern Art's dining operations. As Beverage Manager, you will oversee beverage logistics and programs across The Modern, the Cafes at MoMA, and a wide array of special events held throughout the museum. This position reports directly to the Beverage Director and functions as a crucial liaison between restaurant teams, museum stakeholders, and vendors, ensuring seamless and excellent beverage service throughout daily operations and large-scale events.
The Beverage Manager plays an integral role in supporting daily beverage service by maintaining meticulous attention to detail, organizing cellar logistics, managing inventory, and facilitating smooth communications among various teams. You will be responsible for tasks such as coordinating monthly inventory counts, assisting with invoice and sales mapping, managing pars, and overseeing the upkeep of beverage storage areas. This role demands a proactive, flexible, and organized professional with strong communication skills who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Union Square Hospitality Group, which upholds the philosophy of Enlightened Hospitality, emphasizes that its people are the greatest ingredient. As a Beverage Manager, you will join a culture rooted in care, creativity, and growth, receiving competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits. The position offers an annual salary of $70,000, inclusive of a performance-based bonus, with compensation adjusted based on experience and impact. Additional benefits include comprehensive health coverage, generous paid time off, matched 401(k) plans, life insurance, employee assistance programs, dining credits, and discounts across the entire USHG family of restaurants, plus commuter benefits and opportunities for mentorship and career advancement.
Integral to the workplace culture at The Modern are six key behaviors emphasizing teamwork, continuous improvement, commitment to excellence, resilience, generosity, and responsibility. These values guide the team's collaborative efforts to deliver exceptional hospitality experiences to guests and create a supportive, dynamic work environment for employees. Whether managing inventory, coordinating beverage logistics for high-profile events, or fostering strong vendor relationships, the Beverage Manager position is central to upholding the renowned reputation and seamless operations at The Modern and throughout the Museum of Modern Art's dining venues.
