Job Description

The University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) is a leading educational institution committed to fostering student success, community engagement, and academic excellence. The university operates several dining and specialty beverage outlets across its campus, designed to provide a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. These outlets not only serve high-quality food and beverages but also create opportunities for employment and skill development for individuals seeking positions within a dynamic campus environment. UAA takes pride in maintaining a clean, efficient, and customer-focused operation that supports the overall campus experience.

The Barista position at UAA is a vital role responsible for operating various specialty beverage outlets on campus, delivering premium coffee and beverage experiences to the university community. This role is designed for individuals passionate about coffee culture and customer service. The Barista will be expected to handle all aspects of beverage preparation, including brewing specialty coffee, espresso-based drinks, teas, and other blended beverages, ensuring consistent quality and presentation. Additionally, the position involves food preparation duties following standard food safety protocols, along with routine cleaning and maintenance tasks to uphold a clean and inviting service environment.

In this role, the Barista will serve as a friendly and knowledgeable point of contact for customers, assisting with inquiries, menu recommendations, and order placement. The position requires proficiency in cash handling and Point of Sale (POS) system operations, including accurately processing transactions and managing cash drawers for deposits. Attention to detail is essential for monitoring inventory levels and communicating stock needs to managers to maintain efficient operations. The Barista will actively participate in maintaining cleanliness by continuously wiping down surfaces, cleaning equipment, and assisting with larger cleaning tasks as scheduled. This position requires flexibility to work various shifts, including opening and closing shifts, across multiple campus locations.

To thrive in this position, candidates must have prior barista experience, food handling training or certification, and cashier experience. Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are critical. While the position does not involve supervisory responsibilities, the Barista plays a key role in ensuring customer satisfaction, product quality, and operational efficiency. Employment type is categorized as 'Other' and the work environment is predominantly indoors within a cafeteria setting on a university campus, with mild noise levels and physically active duties including standing and lifting up to 35 pounds. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to gain or build experience in food service within an educational institution setting while contributing to a high-standard service culture.
