This job opening is for a full-time Bar Back position at Marcel, a new continental restaurant located in the iconic Breuer building at 945 Madison Avenue in New York City. Marcel represents a unique collaboration between the acclaimed design brand Roman and Williams and Sotheby’s, the world-renowned auction house whose forthcoming New York headquarters will be housed in the Breuer. As Roman and Williams’ second restaurant following their renowned downtown establishment La Mercerie, Marcel offers an unmatched dining atmosphere complete with La Mercerie Patisserie, ensuring a refined and memorable guest experience. The restaurant’s aesthetic and culinary offerings reflect the same dedication to quality and innovation that defines both partners.

In the role of Bar Back at Marcel, the associate will play a crucial support function within the bar team, ensuring smooth and efficient bar operations during service. The position requires hands-on involvement in managing bar supplies, replenishing beverages, and maintaining cleanliness and organization behind the bar and bar lounge areas. The Bar Back will be responsible for timely retrieval and delivery of liquor, beer, wine, and garnishes from the storeroom, as well as restocking the bar and ensuring that all equipment, including beer taps, function properly. Assisting bartenders as needed by preparing and serving beverages is an important aspect of the job. Furthermore, this role involves maintaining the tidiness of the bar area, including bussing tables, cleaning surfaces, floors, and removing trash, which contributes to maintaining Marcel’s high standards of hospitality and hygiene.

Candidates with prior upscale dining experience are preferred, as the position demands knowledge of professional beverage service and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Marcel offers a competitive fixed pay rate of $25.00 per hour, reflecting the premium nature of the establishment and the skills required. The schedule is full-time with open availability, and shifts may vary, providing flexibility but also requiring readiness to adapt to varying hours.

Job Duties

  • Receive all liquor, beer and wine from storeroom daily and as needed
  • Replenish all liquor, beer and wine in the bar throughout the shift
  • Retrieve needed food items from kitchen and deliver to bar area
  • Retrieve beverage items and garnishes from storerooms and deliver to bar area
  • Set up bottles on bar with top shelf liquor on back shelf
  • Ensure beer taps are working properly
  • Place appropriate bar snacks on counter and keep supplies stocked
  • Assist in opening and closing side work as assigned
  • Bus tables in bar area
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of bar or lounge areas
  • Wash work tables, walls, refrigerators and floors under equipment
  • Sweep and mop service areas including floor mats
  • Remove rubbish from all receptacles
  • Prepare and serve beverages as needed to assist bartender
  • Perform other duties as assigned
