Battle Creek Cellars by Browne Family is Precept Wine’s urban tasting room located in Portland, Oregon. It offers visitors a vibrant and approachable setting to enjoy the company’s wines while experiencing exceptional customer service and a warm atmosphere. The tasting room features regular events, wine club activities, and a thoughtfully curated food program that complements the wine offerings. This location plays a pivotal role in Precept Wine’s direct-to-consumer strategy, connecting the brand with local customers and wine lovers from around the region.

The role of Assistant Tasting Room Manager at Battle Creek Cellars is a hands-on leadership position pivotal to maintaining the high standards and smooth operation of the tasting room. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting daily operations, including floor leadership and shift coverage. The role requires active involvement in many facets of the tasting room’s functions, including staff training and coaching, assisting with the food program, managing wine club activities, coordinating events, supporting marketing efforts, and handling various operational tasks.

This position demands a dynamic individual with strong hospitality skills and passion for wine and food. The Assistant Manager ensures that every guest receives a welcoming and memorable tasting experience. They serve as manager on duty, providing floor presence during opening, closing, and events, and support the team through various tasks such as inventory management, sales promotion, and customer service. They also play a crucial role in onboarding and training staff to deliver outstanding service consistently.

Additionally, this role involves overseeing wine club logistics, managing inventory related to club shipments and pickups, and maintaining detailed member records to help the wine club flourish. The Assistant Manager will assist with the planning and execution of public and private events both on-site and offsite, handling setup, service, and breakdown to ensure events run smoothly.

In support of the tasting room’s food program, the Assistant Manager helps maintain kitchen readiness, food quality, and safety standards, while contributing ideas for menu development and seasonal offerings. They also assist the General Manager with capturing high-quality photos and videos to enhance social media presence, helping to engage the community and promote the tasting room’s offerings.

This is a full-time position averaging more than 32 hours per week, requiring availability for evenings, weekends, and special events. The role is physically active, including standing for long periods and lifting up to 40 pounds. The position also requires an OLCC Service Permit and a Food Handlers Permit.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Ability to lift items up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to stand or walk for lengthy periods
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, special events, and shift coverage as needed
  • OLCC Service Permit required
  • Food Handlers Permit required

Job Qualifications

  • Two years of customer service or hospitality experience preferred
  • One year of lead, supervisory, or training experience preferred
  • Comfort capturing photos and short-form video for a business or organization's social media preferred
  • Experience with employee training and food service or kitchen operations preferred
  • Passion for wine, food, hospitality, and creating memorable guest experiences
  • Strong communication, organization, follow-through, and problem-solving skills
  • Comfort using point of sale, reservation, email, spreadsheet, and social media systems

Job Duties

  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere and memorable tasting experience for all guests
  • Serve as manager on duty and support the team during daily service, opening and closing procedures, and events
  • Maintain regular floor presence and be available to cover opening, closing, floor, and event shifts as needed, including evenings and weekends
  • Share wine and winery knowledge and effectively promote wine, memberships, food, merchandise, and events
  • Support inventory, ordering, reservations, schedules, reporting, calendars, and other assigned tasting room projects
  • Play an active role in onboarding, training, and coaching staff in wine, hospitality, sales, food service, systems, and procedures
  • Assist with wine club runs, fulfillment, and pickup and shipping preparation
