Job Description

Kroger is one of the largest retail supermarket chains in the United States, offering a comprehensive range of grocery products, fresh foods, and household essentials to millions of customers nationwide. Known for its commitment to quality, community engagement, and customer satisfaction, Kroger operates numerous stores that emphasize convenience, affordability, and a positive shopping experience. As a company that values respect, honesty, integrity, diversity, inclusion, and safety, Kroger strives to create a workplace culture that promotes growth, teamwork, and excellence among its employees.

The position of Assistant Store Manager plays a vital role in supporting the store manager and ensuring the smooth operation of all store departments. This leadership role involves a deep understanding of the operations across departments, the ability to share responsibility for overall store performance, and managing complex functions like human resources, scheduling, security, maintenance, safety, sanitation, ordering, and administration. The Assistant Store Manager is expected to demonstrate Kroger’s core values by fostering an environment that prizes diversity and inclusion while also maintaining the highest standards in customer service and operational excellence.

Key responsibilities include assisting the store manager and associates in creating a favorable shopping experience for customers and developing a team culture centered on superior customer service. The role requires collaboration with department heads and store associates to identify opportunities, solve problems, and implement effective action plans that drive sales, reduce shrink, and improve profitability. Managing total store operations in the absence of the store manager, leading teams in merchandise and operational initiatives, and maintaining store compliance with federal, state, and local laws are crucial to success in this position.

The Assistant Store Manager is also deeply involved in staffing, labor management, and retention efforts, ensuring the store operates efficiently while meeting budget targets. The role demands strong leadership skills to supervise, coach, and provide performance feedback to department heads and associates. Additionally, the position requires handling communications related to survey results, community relations, and union interactions if applicable. Through inclusive leadership and proactive problem-solving, the Assistant Store Manager supports Kroger’s mission of delivering excellent service and fostering productive relationships within the store’s surrounding community.

This is a hands-on role that requires flexibility and the ability to perform essential functions with or without accommodation. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of one year experience in department or service management or equivalent, along with the approval of store or district management. While retail management experience and comprehensive knowledge of store operations are highly desired, the Assistant Store Manager must consistently act as a role model, driving results and encouraging a collaborative team atmosphere. The position emphasizes continuous improvement and adaptation to the competitive retail landscape, ensuring Kroger remains a leader in the grocery industry.
