The role of Assistant Safety Director at Holder Construction is an integral leadership position within the Safety team, supporting projects in Fort Wayne, IN, and Mooresville, IN. This position blends strong technical capabilities with people leadership, ensuring safety is an embedded priority from project planning through execution in the field. The Assistant Safety Director is responsible for providing leadership in safety planning, program implementation, and team development on complex construction projects. This role requires close partnership with project managers and superintendents to proactively integrate safety considerations into project goals and daily operations, emphasizing the prevention of serious injuries and fatalities.
In this role, the Assistant Safety Director will lead the development, coaching, and mentoring of Safety Coordinators and Senior Safety Coordinators, ensuring consistent application of Holder’s safety programs and processes. A core responsibility includes leading the planning, review, and execution of high-risk activities such as crane and rigging operations, energy isolation/lockout-tagout procedures, critical lifts, and work at height. The Assistant Safety Director champions the application of Energy-Based Safety principles, including Hierarchy of Energy Control Activities (HECA) and energy wheels, aiming to proactively manage exposure to hazardous energy sources.
The position also involves reviewing and providing guidance on critical job hazard analyses (JHAs), methods of procedures (MOPs), lift plans, and energy control procedures, ensuring that effective hazard identification and control strategies are in place. Leading incident investigations and root cause analyses is a critical aspect, with a focus on implementing corrective actions to eliminate systemic gaps and prevent recurrence of high-consequence events. The Assistant Safety Director also supports preconstruction and work planning efforts to assess risks before work execution, especially for high-risk and Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF)-potential activities.
Building and sustaining strong relationships with project teams, trade partners, and clients is essential for success in this role. Furthermore, the Assistant Safety Director plays a key role in the staffing, development, and performance management of safety personnel, constantly striving to improve safety culture and outcomes throughout the project lifecycle. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- OSHA 30 certification required
- OSHA 500 certification preferred
- BCSP certification (ASP, CSP, or CHST) required or in progress
- Experience in high-risk construction activities such as crane and rigging, energy isolation, and lockout-tagout
- Strong leadership and communication abilities
- Ability to lead safety teams and implement safety programs on complex construction projects

- Willingness to undergo substance abuse testing and background screening
Job Qualifications
- OSHA 30 required
- OSHA 500 preferred
- BCSP certification (ASP, CSP, or CHST required or in progress)
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated experience supporting high-risk construction activities such as crane and rigging, LOTO
- Proven ability to lead safety efforts on large or complex construction projects

- Apply and reinforce Energy-Based Safety principles in planning and field execution to manage exposure to high-risk energy sources
- Review and provide guidance on critical JHAs, MOPs, lift plans, and energy control procedures to ensure effective hazard identification and control strategies
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation, emphasizing systemic gap identification and prevention of high-consequence event recurrence
- Support preconstruction and work planning efforts to identify, assess, and mitigate risk prior to execution, particularly for high-risk and Serious Injury and Fatality-potential activities
- Build and maintain strong relationships with project teams, trade partners, and clients
- Support staffing, development, and performance of safety personnel
