Job Description
Red Rabbit is the largest Black-owned School Food Management Company in the United States, proudly serving hundreds of schools, districts, and food banks across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Founded in 2005, Red Rabbit has established itself as a leader in delivering culturally relevant and nutritious meals to children in urban communities. As an MWBE-certified company, Red Rabbit is deeply committed to fostering dignity, representation, and opportunity through its approach to school dining. Their professional culinary team, consisting of trained chefs, works diligently both onsite at school cafeterias and in commissaries, crafting menus from scratch that reflect the diverse heritage and lived experiences of the students they serve. With a mission that extends beyond merely providing food, Red Rabbit integrates itself into the school community, emphasizing the critical role of food in children’s health, identity, and sense of self.
The Assistant Head Chef role at Red Rabbit offers an exciting and meaningful opportunity for an experienced culinary professional seeking to make a positive community impact. As the second-in-command to the Head Chef, the Assistant Head Chef is pivotal to the daily operations of a busy commissary kitchen that prepares meals for 300 to 500 students per day. This position not only involves culinary execution but also encompasses vital administrative and food safety responsibilities. The role provides stable, family-friendly hours aligned with the school calendar, including weekends and holidays off, making it uniquely attractive for chefs desiring work-life balance without sacrificing their culinary passion.
This position is ideal for a candidate eager to develop leadership skills within a dynamic, fast-paced kitchen environment. The Assistant Head Chef supports the kitchen team in executing menus featuring breakfast, lunch, and snacks, ensuring every dish meets the company’s high standards for recipe integrity and food safety. This role also requires meticulous inventory management, adherence to production schedules, and maintaining stringent cleanliness and food safety protocols to comply with Department of Health regulations. Candidates will benefit from working alongside a dedicated culinary team passionate about improving nutrition in schools and fostering a sense of belonging through culturally relevant meals.
Beyond culinary proficiency, the successful Assistant Head Chef will be an organized communicator who thrives in an entrepreneurial, mission-driven environment. Those with bilingual skills, especially in English and Spanish, and familiarity with National School Lunch Program compliance will find these assets highly valued. Compensation ranges from $23.00 to $25.00 per hour, along with a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off, and professional development opportunities. This role is located in New York City and maintains regular Monday through Friday hours, approximately 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., fostering a consistent and rewarding schedule.
