The Assistant Director of Operations - State Prog Admin at St. Cloud State University holds a vital leadership position responsible for the management and smooth operation of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC). This full-time role focuses on overseeing all facets of facility operations such as staffing, equipment maintenance, and financial management within the allocated budget. The position reports directly to the Director of HBNHC and supports the facility’s high standards by ensuring compliance with NCAA Division I ice hockey regulations and Minnesota Department of Health indoor air quality standards.
A core part of the role includes managing ice-related equipment and maintaining the ice surfaces and fields of play. The Assistant Director develops and implements standard operating procedures related to ice maintenance, ice making, painting, and equipment operation, ensuring all meet NCAA standards. They also manage and train full-time and part-time staff, including ice resurfacers and student employees. The role requires a strategic approach to scheduling, staff development, training, performance evaluation, and promoting team advancement opportunities. Additionally, the incumbent manages custodial services coordination and ensures the facility is clean, safe, and welcoming to all users.
Financial oversight and project coordination form critical responsibilities, involving budget monitoring and collaborates with university maintenance workers on major and minor repairs. The Assistant Director plays a key role in long-term planning for capital improvements, equipment purchasing, and daily operational needs.
This position is non-exempt, classified under the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE) union, and offers a salary range of $23.98 to $34.69 per hour. Regular working hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with occasional overtime required on nights and weekends to accommodate events. Job Requirements
- Two years of professional experience managing an ice arena
- One year providing work direction and scheduling staff
- Outstanding communication skills
- Basic computer proficiency
- Critical thinking and organizational skills
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Ability to work in cold environments for extended periods
- Must be eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
Job Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher preferred
- Two or more years managing an ice arena or related facility
- One year of experience directing and scheduling staff
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Basic computer proficiency including Apple, Microsoft, and Adobe software
- Strong critical thinking and organizational skills
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Certified Ice Technician designation preferred
- First Aid and CPR certification preferred
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
Job Duties
- Develop, train, and implement standard operating procedures for ice surfaces and equipment
- Oversee ice maintenance, ice making/painting, and equipment operation
- Maintain NCAA Division I field of play standards including dasherboards and spectator netting
- Plan and coordinate annual ice installation and ongoing maintenance
- Manage preventative maintenance schedules for equipment
- Coordinate facility operations and custodial services to ensure timely openings and closings
- Supervise full-time and student staff including training, scheduling, performance evaluations
- Maintain accurate logbook records for maintenance programs and ice resurfaces
- Manage indoor air quality measurements and compliance
- Submit Field of Play reports for all SCSU hockey competitions
- Assist with short-term operational planning and long-range capital improvements
- Recommend and plan equipment and operational purchases
- Perform additional duties as assigned
