The role of Assistant Director of Operations at C&S Wholesale Services is a crucial leadership position responsible for supporting the Director of Distribution Operations in managing warehouse, transportation, and other operational functions within the distribution center. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuring that operations not only meet but exceed customer expectations, operational and financial goals, and talent development objectives. The Assistant Director of Operations will assume ownership of key campus activities such as Safety, Quality Assurance, and Training, driving continuous improvement across these domains.

The responsibilities are comprehensive and demand a strategic and hands-on approach to performance management, process improvement, and cross-functional collaboration. The role mandates evaluation of performance and potential across all distribution center functions, identification and rectification of performance gaps, and support in annual operational plan preparation and execution. Additionally, the Assistant Director oversees peak and holiday staffing forecasts, equipment management, and scheduling to maintain operational efficiency.

Customer service excellence is a top priority, and the role requires fostering high service expectations amongst team members, monitoring service results, and effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders including Account Teams, Senior Leadership, and customers. Innovation and adaptability are vital; the position leads the adoption of new processes, assets, and facilities designed to yield measurable business improvements. Cross-functional collaboration is essential to ensure customer satisfaction and business success.

Safety management is another critical element of the role. The Assistant Director of Operations is responsible for maintaining a safe work environment, overseeing compliance with health and safety regulations, managing safety trainings, audits, inspections, and record-keeping. The role demands a proactive approach to accident prevention and the security of all personnel and assets on site.

This leadership position also encompasses human resource responsibilities such as setting performance goals, conducting appraisals, succession planning, team building, and engagement activities to foster a strong and competent workforce. The role operates primarily within diverse warehouse environments including perishable, freezer, and grocery warehouses, in temperatures ranging from -20F to 90F, alongside typical office conditions.

Candidates for this position are expected to have extensive experience in retail distribution, logistics, supply chain, and warehouse operations, combined with an ability to navigate regulatory requirements related to transportation. The role does not require travel and is based on the 2nd shift schedule. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 7-10 years of work experience in retail operations, distribution, transportation, logistics, or supply chain management
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Knowledge of D.O.T regulations and transportation operations
  • Ability to work in various warehouse temperature environments
  • Proficiency in safety management and regulatory compliance
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse teams and stakeholders

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in general studies or related field
  • Extensive experience in retail distribution, logistics, supply chain management, warehouse operations, and transportation
  • Strong leadership skills including team facilitation, training, and motivation
  • Familiarity with Department of Transportation regulations and tractor/trailer operations
  • Proven ability to manage safety programs and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Experience in performance management and development of operational plans
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across business units and with senior leadership

Job Duties

  • Evaluate performance and potential of all distribution center functions, address performance gaps, and take corrective action to ensure delivery against operating objectives
  • Support preparation of and delivery against annual operation plans for campus operations
  • Forecast and develop plans for peak and holiday staffing, equipment, and scheduling
  • Create high customer service expectations among team members, monitor results, and address gaps
  • Communicate with Account Team, Customer Service, Senior Leadership, and Customer on any late deliveries, special requests, or service gaps
  • Direct the adoption and use of improved processes, new assets, and new facilities
  • accountable for achieving incremental business results from the use of these investments
  • Collaborate cross functionally with other business units as needed to ensure customer satisfaction, further company initiatives, and drive company results
  • Maintain a safe environment for team members and visitors in accordance with company policies and health and safety regulations
  • accountable for providing a safe work environment, elimination of accidents, and the security of distribution center facilities and team members while on property
  • Oversee record keeping, regulatory compliance, inspections, audits, safety training, associate development
  • Assist in the development of individual and team performance improvement goals aimed at supporting achievement of campus and company objectives
  • Conduct performance appraisals
  • Support succession planning, team building, and engagement activities
