The role of Artist, Figure Finish at Universal Orlando Resort is integral to maintaining the magic of the rides and shows by preserving the original look and function of animated figures, props, and sets. This position involves a wide range of maintenance and creative responsibilities, including cleaning, repairing, installing, and finishing or painting silicone skins, fiberglass shells, costumes, props, and set pieces. The artist will use their knowledge of a variety of materials and techniques such as silicone skin repair, fiberglass finishing, scenic painting, airbrushing, automotive painting, carpentry, sculpting, mold making, casting, fabrication, sewing, costuming, patterning, wig care, mechanical work, and problem-solving to ensure that all assets remain in pristine condition and function as intended.
Working in coordination with Ride and Show Maintenance teams, the Artist, Figure Finish will provide essential support by facilitating access to figures, props, and sets for inspection and repairs, including mechanical disassembly and assembly of parts related to animated figures. The role requires a high degree of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a team-oriented environment. The artist will also be responsible for fabricating and embedding fasteners and attachments such as buckles, straps, zippers, snaps, stand-offs, tabs, and inserts that are vital to the structural integrity and visual appeal of the figures, sets, and props.
Additionally, the artist will be involved in routine inspections of figures, sets, and props as well as maintaining shop facilities, equipment, and tools. They will document their work meticulously, assist in quality walkthroughs assessing the condition of show elements, and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities by adhering to established policies, procedures, training, and team member engagement activities. Job Requirements
- High school degree or GED
- 3+ years set and prop fabrication and maintenance experience including finishing of animated figures
- Valid Florida Driver's License
- Ability to use various repair and finishing techniques including painting, sculpting, mold making, casting, sewing, and mechanical work
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Willingness to follow Environmental, Health & Safety policies and procedures
Job Qualifications
- High school degree or GED
- Associate's degree preferred in Visual Arts, Scenery Production, Technical Theater, Costuming or equivalent
- Bachelor's degree preferred in Visual Arts, Scenery Production, Technical Theater, Costuming or equivalent
- 3+ years set and prop fabrication and maintenance experience including finishing of animated figures
- Valid Florida Driver's License
Job Duties
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and install flexible and non-flexible skins, coverings including costumes and wigs
- Support structures for animated figures
- Clean, repair, paint silicone and fiberglass skins and shells
- Mend or replace costumes and figure coverings
- Apply airbrush, faux paint, automotive paint, and other painting techniques
- Maintain, sculpt, construct, and paint show sets including backdrops and soft materials
- Fabricate and install show props including molding, casting, and finishing
- Assist Ride and Show Maintenance with mechanical disassembly and assembly of animated figure parts
- Embed fasteners and attachments such as buckles, straps, zippers, and snaps
- Inspect and document conditions of figures, sets, props, shop facilities, and equipment
- Participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities
- Perform other duties as assigned
