Job Description
Austin Community College is a well-established public two-year institution located in Texas that serves a diverse and multicultural student population of approximately 41,000 credit students each fall and spring semester. The college is deeply committed to its mission of promoting student success and community development by providing affordable access to higher education and workforce training. Through a variety of instructional modes including traditional in-person classes and distance learning, ACC offers a range of educational opportunities, including applied baccalaureate degrees tailored to meet the needs of its service area. The institution embraces a progressive and inclusive identity that values intellectual curiosity, innovative teaching, equitable access to education, and meaningful engagement with underserved and first-generation college students. It fosters a collaborative environment that supports student academic achievement and postgraduate outcomes while promoting respectful and diverse interactions within the campus community and beyond.
The role of Adjunct Faculty in Culinary & Pastry/Baking Arts at Austin Community College is designed for dedicated culinary professionals who are passionate about teaching and mentoring students in this dynamic and evolving field. The position focuses on preparing and delivering coursework relevant to Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry that is engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate. Faculty members are expected to uphold professional teaching standards in accordance with ACC policies and procedures while supporting student success and fostering an inclusive environment where all students feel a sense of belonging. Responsibilities include preparing and teaching courses to a diverse student body, evaluating student progress, providing timely feedback, and mentoring students in a nondiscriminatory manner. Additional duties encompass participation in professional development activities to stay current in the field, maintaining regular office hours, meeting grading deadlines, and assisting with the use of the college's learning management system. Successful candidates will have a strong command of both front and back-of-house operations across various food service settings, including restaurants, hotels, catering, and food manufacturing, bringing practical knowledge and a passion for culinary or pastry arts to their teaching.
This position requires demonstrated proficiency with technology relevant to instructional delivery, such as creating presentations and using online learning management systems like Blackboard. Adjunct faculty are also expected to participate in collegewide functions, maintain civility and collegiality in all interactions, and comply fully with ACC’s academic and professional policies. The appointment demands flexibility, as instructors must be willing to teach classes at either the ACC Highland or Elgin campuses, including morning, afternoon, and possibly Saturday sessions. A minimum of an associate degree in Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry from an accredited institution is required, along with at least three years of experience in a sous chef or higher management role or equivalent experience in dining room management when teaching front-of-house courses. The successful candidate should also be physically capable of handling the demands of the kitchen environment, including standing for extended periods and lifting up to 50 pounds. In essence, this role offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the education and development of future professionals in the culinary and baking fields, within one of Texas’s leading community colleges committed to diversity, equity, and student achievement.
