Historical Significance of the Name

The name "Pennyflower" pays homage to a piece of 19th-century Cincinnati history. In the 1860s, following the demolition of Fountain Square's public meat market, a small iron flower cart was installed to honor a legal stipulation that the space remain a market.

Each year, the mayor would ceremonially purchase a flower for one cent from the cart, starting a tradition that inspired the name "pennyflower."
