Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is a public education system located in Oakland, California. It serves a diverse student population across 80 schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as 28 district-authorized charter schools.

As of the 2020–21 school year, OUSD served a total of 48,704 students, with 35,489 enrolled in district-run schools.

Specialized Programs

OUSD offers a range of specialized programs to support its diverse student body:

• Special Education: Serving over 6,000 students with special needs, the district provides training for teachers, resources for families, and implements Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each student.
• Community Schools & Student Services: Coordinating services for 40 "full-service Community Schools," this program offers after-school programs, health centers, attendance and discipline support, and restorative justice initiatives.
• Expanded Learning Programs: These after-school programs foster a college-going culture by offering academic support, enrichment education, and parent engagement activities. Participating schools include Frick Middle School, Garfield Elementary School, La Escuelita K-8 School, Lincoln Elementary School, Manzanita Community School, Roosevelt Middle School, and Urban Promise Academy.

Innovation and Sustainability

In August 2024, OUSD, in partnership with transportation startup Zum, introduced the first all-electric school bus fleet in the United States. This initiative demonstrates OUSD's commitment to sustainability and innovation.
