Shawnee, OK, USA

The Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN) is a federally recognized Native American tribe headquartered in Shawnee, Oklahoma. With a membership exceeding 38,000 individuals, CPN is one of the largest tribes in the United States. The tribe's jurisdiction covers Cleveland and Pottawatomie Counties in Oklahoma, with many members residing within the state.

CPN operates under a ratified Constitution featuring executive, legislative, and judicial branches that govern tribal affairs. The name "Citizen Potawatomi" reflects its history; after relocation to Kansas in the 1830s, the Potawatomi people became known as Citizen Potawatomi.

Cultural Heritage

The tribe is deeply committed to preserving and promoting its cultural legacy. The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Museum and Cultural Heritage Center in Shawnee serves as an educational and cultural hub.

It houses a research library, archives, genealogy center, and exhibits that showcase the tribe's history and traditions.

Economic Development and Enterprises

CPN has diversified businesses that support the community and generate revenue, including:

  • FireLake Discount Foods, the largest tribally owned grocery store in the U.S.
  • First National Bank and Trust Co., the largest tribally owned national bank chain with multiple Oklahoma locations.
  • Grand Casino Hotel and Resort
  • FireLake Golf Course and FireLake Ball Fields, popular for residents and tourists alike.

Community Development and Social Services

The tribe offers programs such as housing assistance, education, healthcare, veterans' services, and career support to improve members' well-being.

Its Senior Support Network provides caregiver programs, case management, and home health services for the elderly population.

Sports and Community Engagement

In 2021, CPN became the first Native American tribe in Oklahoma to own a professional sports team, the Potawatomi Fire, a men’s professional basketball team competing in The Basketball League (TBL).

This initiative highlights the tribe's commitment to community engagement and economic development.

Leadership and Growth

The tribe’s leadership focuses on sustainable growth and cultural preservation.

In 2023, CPN partnered with Purpose and Performance Group to develop a leadership curriculum inspired by the teachings of the Seven Grandfathers, empowering tribal members and promoting positive change.
