Job Description

Zingerman's Bakehouse is a renowned artisan bakery located in Michigan, celebrated for its dedication to crafting some of the best breads in the region. As a part of the Zingerman's community, which is known for its high standards and commitment to quality, the Bakehouse offers a unique workplace environment where creativity, collaboration, and craftsmanship come together. The bakery specializes in hand-crafted, naturally leavened breads, using freshly milled flour and traditional baking methods, ensuring every loaf is a masterpiece of flavor and texture. The team is passionate about bread-making, embracing both the art and science behind the craft, and works together in a supportive and engaging atmosphere.

The Morning Bread Baker role at Zingerman's Bakehouse is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in learning and growing in the artisan bread baking field. This position is perfect for individuals who enjoy being hands-on and physically active in their work, as the job involves scaling, shaping, proofing, and baking various types of dough. The role offers a welcoming and inclusive workplace culture where employees can bring their whole authentic selves, supported by experienced teammates and management. With a minimum starting pay of $16 per hour, negotiable based on experience, no prior baking experience is necessary, making this an ideal entry-level position for those eager to develop their skills.

This job is not just about baking; it's also a chance to gain a comprehensive 'bread-ucation,' learning about the nuances of sourdough, natural leavening, and the intricacies of freshly milled grains. Employees benefit from an active and physically engaging job that encourages movement and teamwork while fostering creativity and decision-making. The work environment is dynamic, with a focus on safety around hot ovens and heavy equipment, maintaining cleanliness, and following precise baking techniques.

Moreover, Zingerman's Bakehouse emphasizes personal and professional growth. The management team actively supports employee development, with the owners themselves having risen from hourly staff to leadership, highlighting the opportunity for advancement within the company. Employees also receive a business education through exposure to Zingerman's nationally recognized business practices, enhancing their resumes and preparing them for long-term career success.

The position includes full-time hours, with shifts running between 5am and 3pm, including weekends, holidays, and especially full availability during the demanding months of October through December. The bakery values punctuality, the ability to multitask, team cooperation, and independent work ethic. Physical stamina is essential, as employees are expected to lift up to 50 pounds, stand, bend, and perform repetitive motions in a warm, humid bakery environment consistently.

In addition to competitive pay and job satisfaction, the Morning Bread Baker at Zingerman's Bakehouse enjoys a comprehensive benefits package after 90 days, including company-paid long-term disability, contributions to medical and dental insurance, health savings account rewards, 401k matching, paid training and lunch breaks, paid time off, and access to an Employee Assistance Program. The bakery also offers fun perks like free bread loaves, significant discounts on baked goods, inexpensive lunch options, reimbursement for massages, free swag, local business discounts, and post-orientation reductions at all Zingerman's businesses.

Overall, this role is perfect for anyone passionate about artisan bread, eager to learn and grow in a supportive team setting, and looking for a fulfilling career in a renowned and respected bakery environment.
