Job Description

Bernalillo County is a progressive and community-focused governmental organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents, communities, and businesses throughout its jurisdiction. Recognized for fostering an environment that promotes work-life balance, flexibility, continuous learning, and inclusiveness, Bernalillo County offers a comprehensive benefits package including generous leave accruals, career development programs, remote and flexible work options, longevity pay, education assistance, health benefits, and a lucrative retirement plan. The organization values teamwork, professionalism, and a commitment to public service, making it an excellent workplace for individuals who are passionate about making a positive community impact.

The Youth Services Center Supervisor role is a pivotal administrative leadership position within the Bernalillo County Youth Services Center, located at 5100 Second St NW. This full-time position offers a competitive pay range from $25.97 to $41.04 per hour, reflecting the critical responsibilities and supervisory nature of the role. The Youth Services Center Supervisor is charged with overseeing the care, treatment, and security of youth residents within the secure setting of the locked facility. This involves ensuring safety protocols are rigorously followed, providing administrative oversight to the staff, and maintaining high standards for treatment and rehabilitation programs.

In this position, the supervisor plays a key role in hiring, training, performance review, and discipline of staff members, fostering a professional and supportive work environment. Leadership includes guiding internal training initiatives, such as physical restraint and agility courses, and contributing to the development and implementation of programmatic goals and policies that promote the social, academic, and life skills of residents. By supervising residents closely during admission and their stay, the supervisor ensures vigilance for signs of distress or harmful behaviors and facilitates necessary interventions, including transport to appropriate health or psychological care facilities.

The supervisor is also responsible for comprehensive administrative duties including preparing reports, reviewing logs and incident documentation for compliance, and coordinating with various stakeholders like probation officers, law enforcement, and families to provide updates on resident care. Handling crisis situations personally, including physical restraint of violent residents and managing escape attempts, is a critical aspect of this role.

Candidates are expected to meet qualifications such as possessing an associate’s degree in a related field and having at least four years of experience in secure or correctional environments serving at-risk youth or adults. Preference is given to those with supervisory experience. The job requires adherence to strict safety guidelines, completion of rigorous initial training including state juvenile code and restraint certification, and the availability for shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays. The working environment involves a majority of indoor duties within a temperature-controlled facility, with some outdoor responsibilities including resident transportation and recreation.

This leadership opportunity not only challenges candidates to lead in a demanding and dynamic environment but also enables them to make a profound difference in the lives of vulnerable youth, guiding them towards better social, academic, and personal outcomes while ensuring the safety and security of all within the Youth Services Center.
