Youth Conservation Corps Fall Crew Lead

Operating primarily in New Mexico, the organization has recently expanded its programming to include a fall Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program, funded by the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), designed to engage local young adults aged 18 to 25 in hands-on conservation efforts. This initiative follows the success of their summer YCC program, which began in 2018 with support from the U.S. Forest Service, and continues CGE's commitment to fostering environmental stewardship and community involvement.

The position available is a seasonal, full-time role as a Crew Lead for the fall YCC program, running from August 24, 2026, to December 11, 2026. This role offers hourly compensation of $18 for a 40-hour work week and includes valuable benefits such as Wilderness First Aid certification and professional development opportunities. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, featuring classroom days on Mondays, project work from Tuesdays to Thursdays, and field trips on Fridays. The program also includes a notable camping trip from September 28 to October 1, 2026. Crew Leads will start one week before the official program launch to assist with preparations and will finish at the conclusion of the program in December. Paid holidays off include Labor Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day, Thanksgiving, and the day after Thanksgiving, with sick leave available upon request. This position requires responsible vehicle operation, as Crew Leads will drive CGE vehicles to transport personnel and equipment to project sites.

In this role, Crew Leads will support the full-time YCC Program Manager by leading conservation projects at various partner locations and co-facilitating life and career skills training modules designed to enhance the crew's educational and professional growth. The position demands a hands-on approach, requiring leadership in the field as well as the ability to mentor and guide young adults through challenging conservation tasks. Crew Leads also contribute to CGE's broader educational mission by aiding field educators during day trips with school groups, helping to cultivate the next generation's conservation ethic.

Ideal candidates for this role bring experience working on or leading conservation crews, demonstrating safe and effective use of trail tools while mentoring others on safety protocols. Familiarity with the high desert environment of the Southwest and New Mexico is essential, as is practical experience with camping, outdoor gear, and teaching outdoor living skills. Candidates should also have a background in environmental or outdoor education programs serving youth or young adults. Competency in driving passenger and cargo vehicles safely in a work setting is mandatory.

Applicants must be New Mexico residents between 21 and 25 years old at the time of hire, possess a valid driver’s license, and be able to meet physical demands such as lifting up to 50 pounds and walking at least five consecutive miles. The position requires availability to work the full duration of the program and participate in the scheduled camping trip. Transportation to and from the CGE office in Albuquerque is necessary. Upon hire, a background check will be conducted due to the organization’s work with youth, and reference checks may follow.
