Job Description
Camp Silver Creek, nestled in the picturesque Silver Falls State Park in Oregon, is a historic and enchanting summer camp that has been offering memorable experiences to campers since 1938. This camp is renowned for its breathtaking natural surroundings, including towering evergreens, a flowing stream, a spacious central field ideal for field games, and a serene lake welcoming boaters, fishermen, and morning swimmers alike. As a part of the YMCA community, Camp Silver Creek operates under a culture defined by inclusivity, genuineness, hopefulness, nurturing, and determination. These core values shape the camp environment where campers and staff alike are supported to realize their full potential within a welcoming and spirited community.
The Kitchen Director position at Camp Silver Creek is a seasonal role ideal for individuals who are passionate about food service in an outdoor, camp-based setting. The pay rate starts at $475 per week plus additional compensation depending on experience. Reporting directly to the Kitchen Director, this role plays a vital part in supporting the overall food service operations that cater to up to 225 people for three meals daily. A successful Kitchen Director leads the kitchen team in ensuring meals are prepared safely, efficiently, and in keeping with health regulations and camp standards.
The role goes beyond just meal preparation: maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen is a critical responsibility. This includes washing dishes, cleaning kitchen equipment, mopping floors, and ensuring the kitchen meets all health code standards. The Kitchen Director oversees the implementation of safe food handling and workplace safety policies, including the appropriate use of equipment and protective clothing. Communication with camp leadership and other kitchen staff is essential to meet the daily needs and challenges of the camp kitchen during the busy summer season.
Candidates will find that this opportunity allows them to be part of a community-driven organization devoted to camp life and enriching the experience of campers and staff. They will contribute to a positive working environment and exemplify the YMCA’s core values in all aspects of their work. The ideal candidate is energetic, collaborative, and capable of maintaining a harmonious relationship with campers and staff, ensuring that everyone involved enjoys a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. With a keen focus on reducing food waste, following established policies, and supporting kitchen efficiency, the Kitchen Director plays a foundational role in Camp Silver Creek’s continued tradition of excellence in summer camp programming.
This position requires the ability to work independently while adhering to standards and prioritizing tasks in a dynamic, outdoor environment. Mandatory training and onboarding occur prior to the camp season, and CPR and First Aid certification are required within the first 30 days of employment. Reliable transportation is necessary due to the camp’s remote location. Overall, this role offers a unique blend of culinary responsibility, leadership, and community engagement within the idyllic setting of Oregon’s Silver Falls State Park, making it an attractive choice for those who want to make a meaningful impact during a summer camp season.
