The role of the Wine and Beer Department Associate is key to maintaining our high standards of service and product excellence. The associate will be responsible not only for delivering exceptional customer experiences but also for assisting the department manager in achieving sales and profit goals. This position involves monitoring quality assurance standards and helping to foster an environment that is both safe and inviting for customers. Associates will be expected to have a deep knowledge of both imported and domestic wine and beer varieties, including their flavor profiles and production methods, as well as an understanding of industry trends that influence consumer choices. In addition to sales, the associate will actively participate in educational and promotional activities such as product sampling (in compliance with company policies and legal guidelines) and pairing recommendations that enhance customer engagement. The role also involves practical duties such as maintaining appropriate storage temperatures, performing safety checks, and collaborating with store chefs and management to support special events and programs. The ideal candidate should be at least 21 years old, possess high school education or equivalent, and demonstrate excellent communication and stress-handling skills. Second language capabilities are highly valued in this multicultural retail environment. Passing a wine proficiency exam after hiring is also a job requirement to ensure that associates can confidently assist customers and uphold the company’s reputation for expertise and outstanding service.

Job Duties

  • Promote trust and respect among associates
  • create an environment that enables customers to feel welcome, important and appreciated by answering questions regarding products sold within the department and throughout the store
  • gain and maintain knowledge of products sold within the department and be able to respond to questions and make suggestions about products
  • offer product samples, consistent with company guidelines and applicable laws, to help customers discover new items or products inquire about
  • inform customers of wine specials
  • provide customers with products that they have requested
  • recommend wine items to customers to ensure they get the products they want and need
  • assist customers with pairing of wine and other items such as meat, cheeses, desserts
  • collaborate with store chef for wine tastings and other programs featuring wines
  • stay current with present, future, seasonal and special ads
  • ensure proper temperatures in cases and coolers are maintained and temperature logs are maintained
  • reinforce safety programs by complying with safety procedures and identify unsafe conditions and notify store management
  • practice preventive maintenance by properly inspecting equipment and notify appropriate department or store manager of any items in need of repair
  • notify management of customer or employee accidents
  • report all safety risk, or issues, and illegal activity, including: robbery, theft or fraud
  • must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation
