The role of a Skilled Knife team member at Smithfield Foods is critical in the company’s mission to deliver safe, high-quality food products to consumers. This position requires the individual to work with a variety of hand tools, knives, machinery, and other equipment to process meat products efficiently and safely. Given the physical demands of the role, a Skilled Knife team member must possess excellent hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic. The job entails using straight knives, skinning tools, shaving tools, hand saws, powered knives, and other cutting tools essential for meat processing. The work environment is physically challenging, involving long shifts up to 12 hours on concrete or platforms. It includes working around animal blood, carcass parts, and sanitation chemicals while wearing necessary personal protective equipment like hard hats, steel-toed shoes, and eye and ear protection. Employees should be prepared to work in cold environments (around 20-40 degrees) as well as warm areas exceeding 100 degrees. Attention to safety, ability to follow oral and written instructions, and maintaining a positive and collaborative workplace attitude are essential.
