FWI is currently seeking a Wet Lab Lead Technician to join their team and lead laboratory operations supporting NOAA's GLERL in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This full-time position offers an hourly wage range of $39.21 to $41.27, reflecting the specialized skill set required to successfully manage and maintain a nutrient and limnology laboratory. The Wet Lab Lead Technician plays a pivotal role in shaping how water quality sampling programs are designed and executed across the Great Lakes region. This includes ownership of the laboratory bench, overseeing precise wet chemical analyses, and contributing to the scientific integrity of studies focused on harmful algal blooms, hypoxia, and ecosystem health.
In this role, the Wet Lab Lead Technician is responsible not only for performing detailed analyses such as carbon and nutrient chemistry but also for mentoring fellow technical staff through hands-on training and developing comprehensive standard operating procedures. The work entails planning and implementing water quality monitoring programs on various research vessels across the Great Lakes, ensuring instrument calibration, data accuracy, and laboratory safety protocols are strictly adhered to. The technician will be involved in handling advanced instrumentation, including Total Organic Carbon analyzers, spectrophotometers, fluorometers, and equipment for measuring beta-emitting radioisotopes.
The role also emphasizes collaboration with GLERL scientists and engineers during seasonal field sampling cruises, typically conducted from May through November, which requires a degree of fieldwork and physical capability such as lifting sample coolers and working aboard marine vessels. The technician will log and manage field samples, maintain meticulous laboratory records, and participate in data analysis and the preparation of scientific materials like charts and publications. Telework options exist for tasks that do not require on-site presence, providing flexibility within a structured Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. schedule.

Job Requirements
- BS degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environmental science, limnology, or related scientific discipline
- demonstrated experience in wet chemistry laboratory environment with environmental samples
- experience with basic laboratory instrumentation and data entry software
- valid driver's license
- ability to lift and carry 50 lb loads
- ability to perform field work and sample collection on marine vessels
- capability to work independently and safely in a lab setting
- strong interpersonal and communication skills
Job Qualifications
- BS degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environmental science, limnology, or related scientific discipline
- demonstrated experience in a wet chemistry lab handling environmental samples
- experience with laboratory instrumentation and data entry software
- valid driver's license
- ability to lift and carry 50 lb loads

- ability to work independently and safely within a laboratory setting
- two or more years of experience in analytical chemistry or biogeochemistry wet labs desirable
- hands-on experience with carbon analysis instrumentation such as TOC/DOC analyzers and elemental analyzers
- experience with automated nutrient analyzers and spectrophotometers
- experience with SOP development
- familiarity with QA/QC protocols
- experience processing environmental datasets using Python or R favourable
- experience working on research cruises in large aquatic systems like the Great Lakes
- knowledge of freshwater ecology and harmful algal bloom dynamics
Job Duties
- Plan and carry out water quality sampling programs on Great Lakes ships
- provide calibration, deployment, and data analysis of in situ instrumentation for nutrients and pigments
- identify techniques to measure nutrient cycling by aquatic organisms
- maintain a nutrient analysis and limnology laboratory with diverse equipment
- develop and conduct technical training for staff
- prepare and conduct environmental sampling and monitoring plans
- perform routine and complex wet laboratory chemical analyses focusing on carbon and nutrient parameters
- prepare chemical reagents, standards, and specialized glassware
- operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory analytical equipment
- execute rigorous QA/QC procedures and maintain laboratory documentation
- log, track, and preserve incoming field samples from research vessels and vehicles
- assist with field data and sample collection on NOAA boats during monitoring cruises
- collaborate to draft and update SOPs, data summaries, and quality management records
- assist in developing figures and technical summaries for research communications
