Job Description
Pantex is a premier engineering and manufacturing facility located in Amarillo, Texas, dedicated to national security through innovative technical work and advanced engineering solutions. Operated as part of the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Pantex plays an essential role in the maintenance, assessment, and refurbishment of the United States' nuclear weapons stockpile. The organization fosters a culture of safety, excellence, and mission-driven purpose, where employees are empowered and recognized for their contributions to safeguarding the nation. With a great emphasis on rigorous quality standards and compliance with federal regulations, Pantex offers professionals a rewarding career with opportunities for professional growth, continuous education, and work-life balance.
The Welding Engineer role at Pantex is a critical technical position within the Mechanical Welding organization. This role supports a wide range of functions, including projects engineering, facility operations, construction, and maintenance activities. The Welding Engineer is responsible for providing expert technical guidance to ensure that welding processes, brazing, and bonding procedures meet all applicable national codes, industry standards, and company policies. The position involves direct involvement in multiple phases of project design, such as scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, and detailed design development. Key responsibilities include writing welding requirements for procurement, reviewing and verifying welding technical data in design outputs, and assessing vendor proposals and submittals for compliance.
Additionally, the Welding Engineer acts as a liaison between project teams, vendors, and on-site personnel by conducting training and ensuring workers follow stringent welding criteria and safety standards. The role may also require participation in on-site field activities, including oversight of welding, brazing, and bonding operations, and non-destructive examinations related to welding processes. Employees in this position contribute to maintaining a safe working environment by adhering to DOE Orders, including the critical DOE Order 426.2A governing nuclear facility safety, and by supporting compliance with Quality Assurance standards under NQA-1 systems.
Candidates for this position generally range from Associate to Senior Specialist career levels and must have a solid background in engineering disciplines related to welding. The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or science and possess a minimum of two years of relevant experience working as a welding engineer within fabrication, manufacturing, or operating environments. Professional certifications such as American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector are highly desirable. Strong communication skills, the ability to work in team-based project environments, and proficiency in managing and tracking project deliverables are essential. This role demands a commitment to procedural discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to plan and estimate project workloads effectively.
Working at Pantex, Welding Engineers are not only advancing their careers but are also making impactful contributions to national security in a dynamic and supportive work environment. The organization values diversity, equity, and inclusion and provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes health coverage, retirement planning, education reimbursement, and work-life balance initiatives. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance, with U.S. citizenship required for clearance eligibility. Pantex is committed to being a drug-free workplace and ensures the utmost integrity and security in all operational facets.
