Job Description

Reading Assist is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to transforming the lives of elementary school students struggling with foundational reading skills, specifically in the Washington DC area. By partnering with high-needs schools, Reading Assist deploys passionate, capable Reading Assist Fellows to provide personalized, evidence-based reading instruction to young learners from kindergarten through fifth grade who face significant challenges in reading. The organization’s mission is to bridge educational gaps and give every child the opportunity to develop strong literacy skills which are essential for academic success and lifelong learning.

Reading Assist is an established AmeriCorps program offering part-time fellowships that require 900 service hours between August 24, 2026, and June 30, 2027. Fellows begin their journey with an intensive four-week, full-time graduate-level training in August, designed to equip them with the necessary skills and techniques for effective literacy intervention. After training, they are embedded within partner elementary schools, delivering tailored reading support to small groups or individual students, typically in sessions lasting 30 to 45 minutes each day. Supported by dedicated Program Managers, Fellows receive ongoing feedback and biweekly site visits to enhance their instructional impact.

This role is perfect for individuals passionate about education, community service, and making a real difference in children’s lives without requiring prior teaching experience. Fellows work directly with children who may face not only academic hurdles but also behavioral challenges, requiring patience, adaptability, and resilience. The position demands a strong commitment to serving Monday through Friday, approximately from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., throughout the academic year following the school calendar, including adhering to school breaks and holidays.

As part of the AmeriCorps community, Reading Assist Fellows engage in all AmeriCorps trainings, events, and projects, fostering a collaborative and supportive network of service and professional growth. Fellows also participate in peer outreach and recruitment efforts, sharing their experience and helping to expand the program’s reach. The fellowship provides a modest stipend of $1,800 per month, serving as a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in education, develop professional skills, and impact the lives of struggling readers significantly. This role requires proficiency or readiness to learn digital tools such as Google Drive, Zoom, PowerPoint, and email, along with access to a personal computer.

Reading Assist is a proud Equal Opportunity Employer that upholds a non-discriminatory work environment free from bias related to age, ability, race, religion, military service, gender, or sexual orientation. The fellowship invites dedicated individuals who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a college degree, ready to commit a year of service that will help shape the academic journeys of young learners facing reading difficulties. This opportunity blends meaningful impact with career development within the education sector, preparing Fellows for future roles in education, social work, community outreach, or related fields.
